On Aug. 9, Mary Knowlton, a 73-year-old retired librarian, was participating in a police night hosted by the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce when Punta Gorda police officer Lee Coel, 28, shot and killed her with a weapon meant for training.

Punta Gorda city council members approved a $2.06 million settlement with the Knowlton family in November, nearly three months after the shooting.

That is one where I can't say the officer has for sure fault. He was given a training weapon and it was loaded.
Now if he loaded it, it's different. It was probably marked for training. The ones I've seen had white electric tape on them.

This is like The Crow Michael Masse killed Brandon Lee with a gun he thought was blanks. He didn't load it.

Someone hands you a weapon you check it yourself. Never take anything for granted.

It should have been checked by the person handing it.

Then rechecked once received.

And quadruple checked if used for training.

And never pointed at a person you don't intend to terminate.

It is tiring though seeing OPs like this used as clickbait.

Today there is NO reason to use a real weapon in any kind of training like this. There are training weapons that are made for this that can not fire a round. Only active SWAT training in police forces use live rounds in very CONTROLLED situations/locations.

Simunition (fires 'paintball' rounds)

training weapon unable to fire any type of projectile

The only thing used for training purposes when pointing at live people is one of those solid block dummy guns. Never anything that can actually hold any kind of live round. Good lord.

So original. So brave.

But there is no excuse AT ALL for using live weapons for training these days. They make training weapons that won't chamber a live round. That is the ONLY thing they should be using.

That pistol doesn't look nearly as cool. Plus the bullets look like little penises.

LLM.... to protest soon I hope.

But seriously how do you not check the weapon or why use a weapon other than a hand.

They actually do this (use non LE personnel) all the time for two reasons.

1. Scenarios that require a lot of people. I.E. school shooting training

2. You want people who don't act like cops playing bad guys and citizens. Cops, no matter how much you tell them not to, will act like cops when the shite hits the fan. Source - I used to do medical training for police departments and getting decent role players meant getting non-police. We never shot anyone. I had very strict safety rules.

That is one where I can't say the officer has for sure fault. He was given a training weapon and it was loaded.

Remind me again what is the first rule of firearm safety?
