While technically still alimony, for much of that time period I would assume they are still married.
For sure. And as mentioned earlier, the amount is determined solely by expenses -- not income. And your own income is factored in there. So if you make $4k a month and your expenses add up to $3500, you're not getting it.
I'm sure that expense list has a lot of extra fluff on it that allows many people to receive alimony anyway, but it's not 100%. A couple we are friends with never had a single alimony payment in either direction because the woman made close to the same as the man and didn't have some crazy list of expenses to cover.

So these women that marry someone well off (if not downright wealthy) to get a comfortable life.
Then they frick whoever they can, divorce their husband and still over half of what he has.
Not anymore.

I completely support Florida here and feel 95% of the time the husband gets screwed but a former friend of mine’s lawyer raped his ex wife’s in proceedings. She got a nice lump sum but he kept the house, boat, ford raptor, BMW, and got 50/50 custody.
He cheated on her dozens of times and stole from their family and his business and somehow got the long end of the stick.
Again, I completely support this reform but sometimes the a-hole husbands do win.
ETA: he remarried a hot realtor divorcee chick with giant fake cans and she has bounced around from loser to loser still available in their 40s.

Pro athletes will be taking huge paycuts to play for Florida teams.

This was a lot funnier when Chris Rock said it.

So if you’re a dude and you want to avoid getting screwed by alimony, it seems like you should marry a woman with intelligence and career aspirations. If you underrate those variables and focus only on looks, then you are setting yourself up for this type of situation.
I can’t imagine not working if I didn’t have children. I continued working even after having children primarily because I didn’t want to take the income hit and also because I liked having the ability to balance work and home without being fully consumed by either. But also in the back of my head there was always this desire to not need to count on anyone else to support me.

I don't think men should really put themselves at legal and financial risk in the family court system unless they are assuming that risk for the benefit of children. Exceptions aside most women who emphasize careers don't have many children.
Also, women still tend to get the benefit of the doubt in family court- even when they don’t do more childcare and earn similar salaries. You really can't count on getting treated fairly even when the wife's career was given equal or more consideration.

I will say that men tend to be biased (probably women are too) in favor of the man. When a couple marry, and split duties in the conventional way, the man not only is the earner, but his earning power increases with his time in the marketplace. The woman gives up this to be a homemaker or at least to prioritize homemaking.
In the event of a divorce, the man takes this earning potential with him. But it was made possible partly by the woman taking on the homemaking duties. Therefore, she should benefit from it. How long? This is what judges are for.

So the contract is terminated, but she should continue to benefit from the contract?
That’s asinine.

Funny this came up
Was married twenty years
Mostly in California
Divorced for eleven now.
She did not ask for lifetime alimony, but I paid a very large amount for ten years.
She also got the house with several thousand dollars of equity.
She sold it and has been traveling the world the past few years.
Right now she is in India..
I am visiting my daughter right now. My daughter is getting married in a few months. I asked my ex-wife several months ago about helping to pay for the wedding. She declined.
Last night, my daughter face timing her mom. I could hear my ex wife talking about all her travels.
It chapped my hide

I have several kids. Having a career doesn’t mean that you need to be consumed by it. Set boundaries, but keep working.
