Driving there Friday, never been. Looking to do a bunch of exploring.

Early 90s was much worse in NOLA. Everyone was talking about crime then, and no one felt safe. I was mugged at gunpoint going out one night as a 23 yr old. My grandmother was mugged walking down Calhoun in broad daylight. We constantly had to worry about break ins where I lived on Broadway. It was the main reason I moved to Houston for work for a few years, and why I bought in Old Metairie when I returned in the late 90s. Believe me, the crime in NOLA is nothing like it was then, in terms of affecting my every day life. I live in NOLA now and have no plans to leave. COVID is a pain but you have to deal with it everywhere and someday it will be gone. It's expensive but again so are most places I'd want to live, and I can afford it at this stage of life.

here do I move out of state but still remain in the gulf coast area?
Go east along the coast. Coastal MS, AL, and FL.

We’re going check out fairhope this weekend.
This is why this is the greatest country in the world. This guy is able to just pick up and move to an 800-900K home.

Baldwin County, Fairhope in particular, needs a moratorium on people moving there. The growth is insane

Are you trolling or stupid with this take?
some of the city is beautiful....but overall if you think new orleans is beautifull.....you have issues.
garden district and maybe small pockets of uptown are....other then that...the city is ugly as frick.

That's cool and all, but you seemed to want to argue that 75% of Nola is shotgun houses and you keep referencing uptown like that's the only neighborhood that's decent that exist.

We going omit Audubon and City Parks? The lakefront is nice spot as well.

A thread about someone leaving NOLA went 9 pages without a single person using the “Well…Bye” gif.
This place has changed.

I still find it funny that baws don't realize how big the area of Lakeview, Lake Vista, "Lake Shore", etc actually is on the Nola foot print. Robert E Lee all the way down to UNO from the 17th street canal is great.
I know the cool dude will say "McMansion", but there is a lot more to that whole area than that and it sure as hell isn't some kind of spec home area.

Then add Bayou St. John, City Park/Mid City, etc. All not Shotgun housing.

Recently fled as well, have young kids too, we found it was hard to beat the Houston area for the schools, cost of living and overall quality of the area.
Florida would be a no brainer without kids, but the areas with good public schools limit your options more.
For your 800-900k budget there’s plenty of options in say the woodlands with great schools and tons of stuff to do for the kids. Plus you’re still close to a big city if you and the wife want to go out

I've always said hell no to Houston. How do ya'll deal with the traffic if you work near downtown? It takes me 15 minutes in the morning and 25 minutes in the afternoon to get to and from work(early go in and early leave).
Some of my co-workers in the Houston area can't even get out of their neighborhoods and onto the interstate in that time.

I've had the greatness of having inlaws living really close by and my parents not too far away. Never wanted to leave the Nola area because of them and not it's even more important since they are elderly and will need our help soon.
I want to be out of this shithole state within five years though and that will line up with youngest being well into college by then.

No state income tax too but be prepared to drop 20k a year in property tax at this price point

your right and two seconds later you are by a ghetto.
and the houses are small as shite in most places.
i really like nola to visit, but i couldnt imagine living there with 3 young kids. Im in the same spot in life the OP is and no way in hell i would live there if i had a choice.
i say all that but i live in LC and it sucks for the most part too. mainly since the hurricane. If my wife and i didnt have to be here....we would move but we cant make what we do elsewhere.
