Wait a fricking minute. Is no one going to comment that Gallons is a unit of volume and Kilometers is a unit of distance. What fricking dumb arse wrote that? You can't have a kilometer of fuel.
As horrible as the subject matter may be, how does that get past an Editor?

I am going to guess that the fuel was spilled 1.6 km

It's metric. They put that stuff in there to make the article have an international feel. I think they learn that in journalism school.

We drove to my wife's parents house for Christmas near Tampa, and at one point I was doing close to 90 and was getting passed like I was standing still.

I know some of the kids' families and the driver of the van. Absolutely sickening news.

Pretty devastating. The lady across the street from me several years back on a trip ran off the road and killed 2 of 3 sons and her mother. She never left the house after that and eventually they moved. Would be tough not to commit suicide under such intense guilt and grief.

That is a terrible stretch of interstate. Basically a bottleneck where everybody from all over the country is driving like mad to get to Disney mixed with 18 wheelers. Sad story.

The whole point of the median guardrails is to prevent this exact thing from happening.
Also, passengers ejected generally means they weren't wearing seat belts. If this was a big 10 or 15 passenger van, while there are seat belts in them, it's common for people to not wear them, sadly.
What about the driver of the van and I assume any other adults? How are they?

Well, that's enough internet for me today.

30 years ago big rig drivers were the safest drivers on the road.

I've driven to Disney at least a dozen times. One time I had this bright idea I wanted to drive straight to Magic Kingdom for 8 am, so I was on the 75 stretch between Lake City and the Turnpike at like 3-4 am.
Never, ever, ever again. Dark as crap and 18 wheelers buzzing by me.
Even in bright daylight, that road is a mess.
About the only redeeming value of that part of the drive, is rolling down my window to stick my bird finger out when we are passing Newberry Road (the road to Ben Hill Griffin stadium)

She and her teenage son are alive but in the hospital. I don't know much more than that

Any time someone wanted to take my kids on a trip in one of those big passenger vans I was like "nope, i'll drive them"

(not a comment on the driver of this van because we don't know anything) I have an irrational fear of those vans because it seems like they're always getting picked off like this.

Church vans, and passenger vans in general are very dangerous when brought above 60-65 MPH.

I drove one for about a year as a shuttle driver. They drive fine and aren't that hard to operate, especially on an open road. But they don't turn or stop quick, and they are susceptible to rolling over.
And passengers treat them like a bus and don't want to wear seatbelts.
