My business email is fine to ignore. I'm talking on my business/ personal phone. I don't like things that are "unread" or unattended to. It drives me nuts. Plus, if you have 3 text messages its harder to decipher if its 3 new texts from your mom or 2 from your mom and one from your dumbass vendor.

Texting is a tremendously efficient way to handle minor business and the young people see it and use it. You old frickers need to catch up.
You're holding your employees back by discouraging a very effective method of communication

The worst part about texts, is it forces immediate action.

Because if you don't do something about it, you'll likely forget about it.
This is all much easier than you make it out to be.

I agree, your vendor should not conduct business via text unless you set the precedence that it is acceptable.

As a business owner of 20 years it seems like you have poor time management if you think non essential phone calls and messaging after hours is acceptable.
Now you move the goal post when called on your BS.
I decide what isn't essential for me and delegate the rest out to the proper people. Anything they feel I need to be involved in they know to call or text me no matter when it is. I trust them to make the right decision otherwise.
Maybe you should learn to be a better custodian of your business instead of passively aggressively crying on a message board.

I am 34 lol. Texting is fine, during normal business hours.
Again, its the 6:30am text on Saturday morning from my overnight custodian that is saying "job is done".
There is a time and place for everything.
Its really no different then sending an email about "the building is on fire get out!".

This is what is still bothering you 3 days later? Seriously?
Geez...

Modern day business. It just is. Have to manage it.

Exactly, so now you are moving the goalpost. Nice try though. I'm the only employee in a management role. So what would you suggest now?

That was an example, I got one today at 6:45am.
Its not a huge deal, thus the "first world problem of the day".....as in sarcasm. Lighten up Frances.

Doubtful because if you did you would understand that as a small business owner there aren't really things as normal business hours for small business owners. I have been self employed for going on 20 years now and have never complained about work outside of "normal business hours" because I know it comes with the territory.
This x10000.
You better get with it or you wont have it long. I look at it as at least they are calling and i do what it takes.

If your employees think they need to text you every time a task is completed, have you considered that you might be a micromanaging a-hole?
Serious question.

Hire a manager or deal with it or do what I did and tell them don't call/text me about dumb shite.

You can change the settings on your phone.
You can turn off read receipts and not have it blast “Who Let the Dogs Out” at max volume every time you get a text.

I saw a guy at a previous job get fired after he accidentally responded to a group text saying he was about to roll up a blunt.

People that text or call me after business hours with non emergencies aggravate the crap out of me, and i'm pretty honest with them how i feel about it. I have zero problem handling issues that need handling no matter what time of day it is. I've answered the phone on the 4th of July from a good customer of mine. Emergency situation and i left the pool party I was at to handle the situation. I answered a call on Christmas day from some jackass that was just calling to tell me to work up a quote for him when i get back in the office. He got that quote mid january after he called to remind me about it, even though i could have gotten it to him the next day. One of those calls was necessary, the other could have been done in an email.
Get a life outside of work. i have one, so quit fricking bothering me outside of working hours. Whatever you have to say can wait until the morning, and if you think it can't wait, then send an email. Have some respect for other peoples personal lives. I choose to work outside normal business hours on my computer sometimes, and that's my choice to do so and when i do so. other people telling me when to do that grinds my gears.

My sarcastic rant was not a question of how to handle this, I'm well aware of all of your suggestions I do appreciate it though.
My rant was simply that there is a time and place for all means of communication. Non essential texts and phone calls after hours is no different then sending an email about an emergency. Its very simple to understand what method should be used.
There is just a good portion of our population that loves to text for everything.

Well you’ve failed to properly vet and control the people that have your cell phone number. It doesn’t sound like leadership or communication are your strongest skills.
Posted on 3/6/19 at 8:54 am to baldona
If its not an emergency, i never respond after hours. My boss is bad about it. He also calls at like 8 and is confused when i dont answer.
A client or vendor hardly gets my cell # and I'll tell them to email me the next business day
