I was in Rome at the end of June and had exactly the same experience you had, except it was really hot.
One thing I observed is that everyone was very nice also. We didn't have any issues at all.

Thank you. None of us rubes will ever get to go, so I only know about Rome from watching Kirk Douglas films.

I don’t know what part of Rome you visited. Maybe you were away from the heart of the city. We stayed a ten minute walk from the Forum and Coliseum area. I never saw anyone that looked sketchy. I only saw a few homeless people in that area. Most nights we ended up having a very late dinner and walked about 25 minutes back to the hotel around midnight. No concerns at all and I’m 60 years old. New Orleans is one of the most dangerous cities in the US. I don’t even like to drive on the interstate in New Orleans at night.

Ductless AC units were very common on the apartment buildings. The shops were similar to the ones in the US with AC’s blasting, especially the clothing stores and high end shops. My experience didn’t match the stuff I was reading on here about the UK. Even in Athens the stores were like many in the US with the doors staying open and AC blasting. They didn’t seem concerned about their carbon footprint.

Congrats on European travel. There is an entire board for this. In the future, if you ever attend a baseball game or listen to an album and have thoughts, I suggest you consider the many boards TD offers.
