I want him to do the same while keeping him safe in something that isn't a complete POS and, because I don't expect to keep it long-term, something that won't break the bank.
Toyota Camry FTW. problem here is they are fast as hell and my daughter kept racking up tickets.

Used Honda civic. Manual or auto. They are very easy to drive. Bought my daughter a 2018 hatchback. It worked well for her first car

My boy has a 22 Tacoma TRD 4x4. Figured pretty much bullet proof, dependable, and he shouldn’t get made too much fun of.

Depends if he's rocking a New Iberia haircut or not...

Will also teach him maintenance for WHEN the coolant bottle splits and the head gaskets fail.
Third generation MINIs have neither of these issues.

8th or 9th gen Accord with a 4cyl, so he can’t go that fast. The K series engines are bulletproof and it is one of the safest cars on the road.

Depends on your bank. I bought my daughter a 2022 Camry. Thought being is she’s going to college in 2 years. That should easily get her through that and into true adulthood. $20kish. Now one of her friends has a 12 year old Acura. Looks just as good in my opinion, $8k I believe. Just get an idea on the maintenance costs for the brand and model before you buy if you want to be fiscally smart about it. Beware of European imports for cost of repairs and availability of competent technicians. Price insurance first.

It's hard to be looking at your phone when you're driving a manual.

My second vehicle was an 86 Celebrity, v6. It had some pep for such an ugly car. I towed a small boat with it too.
The only thing wrong with it, besides being ugly, is it would stall on right turns, so when turning right you'd have to goose it.
First vehicle was a 77 Impala.

My favorite thing to look at before 16 was auto trader.
Just go online and look for things in your area for whatever price you are comfortable with. Can also check CarMax.

The hill that I will die on is that kids need a cheap, ugly car for their first vehicle.
First, because they're going to probably tear it up. Second, it gives them reasonable expectations and a good baseline.
Most kids who are given fairly new, nice vehicles as teenagers are never going to downgrade so they end up rolling car note after car note and really struggle to break that cycle.
To answer the other question, my first vehicle was an 05 Z71 that I bought myself with 180k miles for like $7k. I kept it about 10 years.

Update: unexpectedly, the in-laws came over tonight and offered their 2011 Silverado with 124K miles. FIL has Parkinson’s and hasn’t driven regularly in a couple of years. Fits the bill perfectly. No strings attached. It’s a blessing.

My son will get my 2016 Tundra when he starts driving. It’ll be perfect for him
