Mine was an '88 Corolla.
I'd get him a used Camry or Corolla. Who gives a frick if he gets made fun of. He can worry about that when it is his money buying the vehicle.

This was mine when I got it in about 1966. My grand mother gave it to me. Had 19,000 miles on it at the time. Cops would stop me just so they could have a look inside and remind me that it was illegal to use the spot light.
Today, I would recommend buying a new driver a Rav4 with 100,000 miles on it or something along those lines. There are a few models that will go 300,000 miles or more.

I found a base model 2002 Accord with 86k on it. Old lady that owned it is in an old folks home fighting dementia. Those cars will last until 300k with basic maintenance on them.
Gonna give it to my oldest in a couple of months, and let her drive, ding, kill it from now through college hopefully. Then it’s on her to find, and buy something else newer and nicer to drive around in!!

whats a good starter vehicle for a 16 yr old boy?
I set a price point for a used car, then found the most airbags I could get at that price point. Also factored in mpg and reliability. But I had a daughter. If I had had a son, I probably would have flipped him a key to my then 10-year-old Nissan pickup and told him I would still take it anytime I wanted to.

Why, so he can get all pissed off driving it to only never drive one again unless he gets older and decides to buy an old car with one?
Manual is gone brotha
All I've ever driven are manual vehicles and I've never been pissed off driving one. They're always fun.

Mazda 3 or 5. Safe, fun to drive, easy to park.

Do some research on safety ratings and go with something in the upper tier. Teens do not realize how dangerous driving a 2500 pound box of steel at 55 MPH can become.

The goal for a first car should be to keep them safe. That is the main goal. Not gas mileage, not necessarily reliability, though that would be a plus. If they get killed in a small fuel efficient car, the gas mileage will be the last thing on your mind. Get a pick up or SUV that will provide them with protection. Get the smallest engine offered. Let them drive that for a year or two, and it should protect them unless they have bad luck. I know this is a downer, but you owe it to them to protect them to the best of your ability.

manual MINI Cooper. Teach him how to drive stick.
Will also teach him maintenance for WHEN the coolant bottle splits and the head gaskets fail.
