I was always disappointed when I saw him act in other things and he didn't have a limp, or speak like a total 'neck.

I always thought the best Gunsmokes were the early ones before Festus joined the cast. Nothing against Festus, but the earlier ones seemed more grittier and more well written.

I prefer Dirty Sally

"Matthew, the onliest thang I knowed about that sidewinder is that he's catterwhompassed in his mind cause his head ain't right".
Ken Curtis was great as Festus. And by the way, the last name is spelled Haggen in the cast credits.

I grew up watching Gunsmoke reruns. It's weird to see him (Curtis) show up in old 50s movies that his father in law (John Ford) directed. He was a singing cowboy type when he broke into Hollywood.
He had a decent role in Mr. Roberts with Cagney, Hank Fonda and Jack Lemon.
Festus was a great character, no question.

His Gunsmoke pay must not have been great. After he had been on the show for several years, he was still making appearances at small-time rodeos and festivals.
Many folks on here have posted before about meeting him at those events. I saw him twice.

Festus didn't limp, that was Chester.
Matt: she aint that tall,Festus.
Festus: she's tall enough to hunt geese with a rake!

I like it when he writ down what they were having for vittles, and opened up the paper and it was a picture of a pig with an arrow pointed at his arse.
Festus was an awesome character.

From watching Gunsmoke reruns for over sixty years, you are correct.
Without googling do you know the name of Matt's horse?

Had nothing to do with pay. I saw Michael Landon, Dan Blocker, Ken Curtis, Dale Robertson at Blackham Coliseum as a small boy.
Talked to Little Joe and Ken Curtis the afternoon before the show. They were very approachable.

Festus was good but I liked Gunsmoke better when Chester was the Deputy.
