I would have a FedEx truck deliver me to the funeral and then the burial if I were him.

It's not like he succeeded overnight. He had the complete package.

Yep. He started FedEx with $95 million in personal inheritance and venture capital. UPS was started by Jim Casey with a couple of bicycles and $100 loan. And because FedEx started out as an “airline”, it has also operated under the National Railway Act giving it a huge advantage over a unionized UPS that has to operate under the National Labor Relations Act.

Memphis is already bad. If Fedex moves out. Memphis will basically be a 700,000 person version of Jackson, MS.

Probably worse. FedEx has something like 33k employees in/around Memphis (to put this into Baton Rouge context, it would be similar to Exxon employing ~5x as many people in the BR area), making them the largest employer in the area. Another large employer, Auto Zone, would likely be negatively impacted as well (possibly pushing them to move not long after).

That many paychecks shrinking or drying up would have massive ripple effects throughout the economy, making it into a larger and more violent version of Jackson within the following 10 years.

All that said, there's pretty much zero chance FedEx moves out of Memphis at this time. I'm not saying it won't happen, but FedEx has a massive amount of stroke by being such a large player in the area that they have massive complexes in Memphis, Germantown and Collierville while also using the lion's share of the space at MIA (which was made for/by FedEx in the first place). That's an incredibly sweet setup, so something strong enough to lure FedEx from Memphis would have to be insanely good (so good I would be skeptical of it).

If you have been to Marks, MS you would understand how stupid your comment is. Even if he was from money, the be from Marks, MS and be from money and then make more, way more, is crazy odds.

My man, he left Marks, MS when he was like 3 years old. He grew up in Memphis. His family had “frick you” money

The odds of him coming from Marx is still crazy. That being said, I think Charly Pride was from close by there too.

They also have their own massive airport hub in Memphis, separate from the main Memphis airport. It would cost tens of billions to relocate all their infrastructure elsewhere and wouldn’t really make sense fiscally

My brother in laws dad was one of Fed Ex’s first pilots. He had to use his own credit card to fuel his plane on a return trip bc Fed Exs credit was at his limit. There’s an old newspaper article on the story

They could just move the headquarters a few miles to Southhaven, Mississippi. But that would be dumb, unless Mississippi completes its income tax phase out. Tennessee doesn’t have income tax.

Their corporate headquarters are in the burbs already. Wouldn’t make a ton of sense regardless to go to Southaven, even if they get rid of state income taxes in MS

Ain't happening.

Smith made sure of that for whenever he would no longer be around.

Fun for people to think about I guess, but ultimately a waste of time.

Another fun fact, number of Fortune 500 corporations

Louisiana - 0
Memphis - 3

Another fun fact. Pitt Hyde and Fred Smith both attended the same elementary school and same high school and were there at the same time

He’s probably talking about Richard Smith, his eldest son. He is a piece of shite. Cannon Smith, his youngest, isn’t a saint either
