Fred Smith, founder and executive chairman of FedEx Corporation, has died.

Smith died on Saturday, sources confirmed to WREG. He was 80 years old.

quote:

Smith was born in Marks, Mississippi, in 1944 and earned his degree from Yale in 1966. After four years of service in the United States Marine Corps, Smith launched FedEx operations in 1973. FedEx is headquartered in Memphis. FedEx would go on to become a multi-billion-dollar corporation that serves more than 200 countries. Memphis is home to several FedEx hubs, including the FedEx World Hub in the airport area. Smith served as CEO of FedEx until 2022, when he stepped down and became executive chairman. FedEx states that Smith used his time as chairman to focus on “board governance, as well as issues of global importance, including sustainability, innovation, and public policy.”

Memphis is already bad. If Fedex moves out. Memphis will basically be a 700,000 person version of Jackson, MS.

Kept the lights on at FedEx by gambling the last bit of cash on blackjack.

Marks, MS to Yale is incredible enough.

Then joins the Marines and starts FedEx before he's 30?

I'm such a piece of shite.

His family had a lot of money. He went to the best private schools from kindergarten through high school. He’s not a rags to riches story. He took wealth his family had and turned it into a global empire. Still a very impressive man but it’s not like he was a broke poor kid from MS who ended up a billionaire

Correct, he came from a logistics/transportation family background. Greyhound Bus Lines.

I first met Mr. Smith in 1984 as a very new employee at Federal Express. He remembered me the other three times I was around him. They said he never forgot a face.

A great man, a great Memphian and a true visionary.

RIP Sir.

If you have been to Marks, MS you would understand how stupid your comment is. Even if he was from money, the be from Marks, MS and be from money and then make more, way more, is crazy odds.
