Stunning revelation by WDSU!!!

quote:

According to New Orleans and Company, estimates show that between 80% and 90% of tourists to the Crescent City visit the French Quarter at some point during their stay.

“The customer that comes here is somewhat afraid of their experience because of what is happening of recent times. The number of guns that’s been out on Bourbon and, unfortunately, a number of fatalities that’s happened on Bourbon Street. So, I think that at one point it was about fun and coming out and just having a great time, which is still happening, but I don’t think it’s at the scale that it was," said Chris Ross, who worked in the Quarter for nearly 30 years.

He says he has noticed a stark decay in the French Quarter and particularly Bourbon Street over the time he has been there. He says crime is on the rise, but infrastructure and a lack of policing are also an issue.

Fears grow?

The FQ has been on a downward slide for like 10+ years.

Glad they finally showed up to the party that’s been going on for a long time.

Most people around here won’t go to New Orleans anymore because of the crime.

Since when did this suddenly become a thing?

The last few years just weren’t noticed?

At minimum NOPD should be making the FQ and Dome areas literally off limits to criminals by extreme measures.

Its actually criminal of the current administration to allow intrusion into these areas with little to no push back.

Chicago, with its significant crime problem, does a pretty good job keeping areas where tourists go safe and clean. I’m surprised N O doesn’t do better.

Meh, there’s nothing but daiquiri shops and pizza slices down there now anyway.

Chartres says "bon jour". Seriously, some of the streets there are worse than the dirt roads I grew up on.

I'm sure the increase in the homeless sleeping on the sidewalks, in doorways, etc and the increase in skunkweed smells haven't helped either. Whenever I have to step over old feces on the sidewalks I just tell myself it's from someone's dog.

Oh, shite, now you've done it.

Place gets more disgusting by the day, though. Anxiously awaiting the pom pom squad to try to tell someone who sees it every day otherwise.

But the political powers to be would rather not offend or upset the criminal element in the city rather than give law abiding citizens and tourists peace of mind knowing that they will be safe in those areas

That would actually be an improvement over them just sprawled out in the open on the sidewalks.

My last trip to NOLA in September was an eye opener. Maybe the worst conditions I've seen in the past 50+ years. Watched a mime so fricked up on huffing paint I really thought the sob may not make it through the night. So, as much as I love NOLA, I'll have to have a real good reason to go back.

tourists to the Crescent City

off topic but this made me think of it.

Last time I was in NO was 4 years ago and my wife and I were doing whatever touristy shite and she wanted to go do something that i can't even rememebr now but I remember it had a tour guide. We were walking around and the guide goes "trivia time- does anyone know the nickname for New Orleans?" or something like that. 90% of all my Louisiana knowledge comes from Tiger droppings and at the time I was just kind of on autopilot and not really engaged in waht we were doing. So I swear on my life my mouth was forming the words and I was in the process of shouting out "Chocolate city!" when someone beside me goes "Crescent city?" and the tour guide answered in teh positive becuase of the shape of the river or something. But in that couple seconds afterwards I got taht deep down in your gut anxiety/embarrassment feeling just thinking about what would've happened if I'd actually answered. Tahnks tigerdroppings

Even if it takes a state constitutional amendment, the state should take over the FQ and maybe some surrounding areas. These areas are too important to La. to let, corrupt, incompetent, low intelligence city leadership have any say in the governance. The state should create a police district and staff it and push NOPD out, or to a support role. If need be, the state should build it's own jail to minimize dealings with the corrupt Orleans Criminal Sheriff. This district would be be controlled at the state level, and so the "gimmiedats", and uber-liberal out-of-state transplant hipster voters of Orleans Parish would have a very diluted say.

New Orleans has utterly shown that it cannot responsibly govern itself, so starting with the FQ, it should be governed by a statewide electorate. Not saying La. voters are awesome, just that Orleans voters are truly that bad.
