I don’t have a fear but I don’t really care for flying. it’s really just the whole process of arrive early, check in, TSA, finding gate, etc. Something usually ends up happening and it will be stressful and/or annoying.

I’m a bit of a nervous flyer, yes. Weirdly, having a drink or two makes it better, but being hungover (if I drank the night before) makes it way worse. So I plan accordingly around that.
Side note. You don’t always have to be an OT baller to get out of a shitty economy position. Most domestic routes don’t get many people paying up front for First like they do international, so the airline will often email you at random times leading up to the trip with “special offers” to upgrade that are far less than you’d have spent opting for it when you booked.
I’m flying First all 4 round trip legs of a trip this weekend because I waited for the later offer. When you consider free checked bags, free drinks, free meal, etc…. Not the worst. And most of all, not dealing with the frustration (people wise) of being shoved tightly in some back of plane seat waiting to get off.

I have a friend who is 43 and has never been on a plane. Just terrified of them. Of course he's the one that sent me the news of last nights crash. .

I am not afraid of flying. I do however hate it. I hate everything about the process of commercial flying. I have been on a couple charter flights and they were not that bad. Flying in a small plane, over mountains, can be crazy depending on air drifts. Helicopters so far, have not bothered me much. In fact low and fast in a chopper is pretty fun.

I try to spend as little time as possible in airports.

Try flying millitary Space-A. That's how you show up four hours before a flight at 0130, only to be told the C-5 needs another day of repairs, and repeat two more times.
I was fine until 2006. I started chewing gum when leaving Atlanta every week, and that horribly reinforced turbulence anticipation that summer, even before boarding. Never been the same since, even though I recognized what the gum was doing and I quit doing it.

I have a completely irrational fear of flying. I know it's an irrational fear, but that doesn't change the fact that I won't get on a plane without medication.
As a kid, I didn't have this fear. My dad got a private pilot's license in Alaska and we flew all over the place in his tiny arse Cessna and I was fine. There was a few incidents prior to leaving Alaska and one big engine out in Tennessee that made me completely nope on flying. Even though a Cessna 172 doesn't compare to flying in commercial, it still freaks me the F out to get on any type of plane.
Some part of it is my engineer brain is analyzing every little sound non stop (even though I know zero about jet design) and I can't settle my stress level at all. Another part of it is I am just a passenger with zero control. Plus I have a very low tolerance for motion, like I hate most roller coasters because they make me sick.
I will get on a plane, but I get a big prescription dose to where I almost need to be wheeled on to do it.
What's funny is I love the idea of flying. I fly RC planes and I love flight sims. It makes no sense and completely irrational...

Flying is a very safe form of transport.
Having been in a plane crash, I prefer to fly in good weather (and won't fly if the airport has storm weather in the area). I also fly airlines where I know the pilots are highly experienced.
I don't fly that often, and I have had a high percentage of shitty flights. I had block of ten flights where there was a runway overrun with the landing gear sheared off, engine failure in flight, aborted take off, and hail hitting the plane. 4 out of 10 LOL. In another flight in that group, we landed in Shreveport on a night where the south wind was strong. An AA big jet pilot was seated next to me. The pilot seems to have trouble getting the plane on the ground, and he used up all (and I mean all) of the runway. I looked at the AA pilot next to me and he gave me the "yea, I know that was shitty landing look."

Why? Are you nervous driving?
I don't get nervous at all driving. In fact, I like driving.
Wasn't always nervous flying. Flew for track and cross country meets in college. Was fine flying for a while for work out to the Permian and stuff, but about 6-7 years ago just started getting really anxious with it.

Something about being in control for me and being on the ground makes driving fine even knowing there is a greater risk.
This for me as well. I know it may seem irrational, but it's just the way I feel about it.

I have history of weekly helicopter flights and over the last 2 decades I was on a commercial flight at least once a week.
I never really got comfortable with it no matter the country or continent.
BTW, redditors are a weird bunch.

The more I read this thread the more I think people don’t actually fear flying, they fear not being in control.

If you look at the statistics, flying is so much safer than driving it's incredible. If you measure it in terms of fatalities or injuries per thousand passenger miles or something like that.
We have gone years and years withat fatality on a major airline.
Meanwhile 30,000+ per year die in cars due to drunk driving, speeding, and distracted (texting?) driving.

I think that's accurate. It is in my case. If I could ride in the front, I'd do it every chance I got.
Eta: actually, its not a control issue the more i think about it. I trust the pilot and crew. It's a situational awareness issue for me.

I'm much more scared of driving in Houston traffic everyday than I ever am getting on a plane

This is pretty much me, I don't care for flying but don't have a fear of it and sometimes not flying isn't an option so I have to deal with it. My dislike of flying stems from hatred of the entire process of doing it, the waiting, the security, checking bags, getting seated next to some stranger, being herded in/out/everywhere, baggage claim, the possibility that your flight/travel day can be massively delayed/cancelled by one passenger being a dickhead, the expense of it all, etc. If at all possible and reasonable I'm driving, its cheaper and I truly enjoy the chance to see parts of the country that I wouldn't get to otherwise.
Don't do helicopters though, not happening. My only helicopter ride was in AirMed and we've had a family member killed in a helicopter crash. Not a fan of them.

I've developed EXTREME trust issues as I've aged. Given the opportunity to do something stupid, enough people seem to take that as a challenge and readily.accept it as such.
It boils down to if I cannot drive, I stay home. I've traveled the world while in the army, didn't leave anything behind I want to go looking for.
Statistics between driving and flying be damned, if a car wreck at least I was in some semblance of control.
Ironically, I will probably get squished by a plane while driving one day.
