You're right that if society had never come to view that word as vulgar, it might not carry the same meaning it does today. But language derives much of its meaning from how it is understood by the people using and hearing it. In today's culture, that word is widely recognized as profanity, and because of that, I choose not to use it.
I'm not trying to make a rule for everyone else. It's simply a personal conviction based on my faith and my desire for my speech to reflect the values I believe Scripture teaches.
