Our local one appears to be unstaffed most of the time since it got self checkout.

You want to talk about unstaffed? I had to take a leak a couple weeks ago, so I pulled off at a brand new gas station. I walked in and there was no one in there, no one at the checkout. I took a leak, grabbed a drink, and went to pay. They had the deal where you just sit your shite on the counter and it magically rings it all up. I was paying when a dude walks over with couple things, walks around the counter, and grabs two packs of cigarettes. I thought he worked there, but nah......he went to to other magic checkout deal, laid the stuff up there, it rang it up, he paid, and we walked out at the same time. It clearly wasn't the first time he'd done that.

It was a pretty much a fricking convenience store ran on the honor system. I guess someone was in the back or fricking off doing something else....I dunno. It was weird.

It's wild how many dollar generals there are in the rural South. You can drive like 10 miles and see 3 houses but 5 dollar general stores.

It's the only way for DG to make more money. It's shocking how little profit a single store will turn in a day. So they have to keep expanding to increase revenue.

The entire staff at a dollar general in Shreveport walked out the other day. I’m sure they’re wasn’t any 5 finger discounts that morning

Sure, there is one near me that I visit often.

They are not Family Dollar which is what the thread is about.

They opened a Family Dollar near my house. In 6 months it looked like it had been there 30 years.

All I know is that one thing I have learned about Dollar General over the years is that if you're either in one or driving when a tornado is bearing down on you, you are better off taking cover in the ditch out in front of the store.

I think they build those damn things out of duct tape and legos.

Family Dollar was profitable back in the day. The Levine Foundation in Charlotte has sunk a ton of money into healthcare (Levine Cancer Institute) and the arts. Sold out at the right time.

I was in a Dollar Tree yesterday in a small rural town in NE Arkansas and it was clean, neat, friendly staff, stocked shelves. If I decided to go in either of the two DT stores in Elick it would be trashed and bitchy staff.

You figure out the reason for the difference.

Only one Family Dollar and one Dollar Tree without 2 miles of my house, 3 Dollar Generals within the same radius. I’ll go to Dollar General over Family Dollar everyday of the week. It might be the poor coming out in me but Dollar General stores in general have definitely improved over the last several years, Family Dollar is still a hot mess.

Their goal is to have a store within a few minutes drive of every house in America. Last I checked they had about 20,000 stores in the US. About 15,000 more than Wal Marks.
