Surprised Walmart didn't jump in on this business model, surely they have more buying power than the dollar stores.

With their logistical structure, seems like it would have been an easy leap.

Not good for the poors, less jobs and less places to steal from.

There are 29 DG's in a 30 mile radius of my house, literally. And they are building one of those FD/DT hybrid stores 6 miles from my house. We used to have little country stores out where I live at nearly every road crossing. There is only one left. Sad.

Always surprises me at the assumptions so many people make.

quote:

Dollar General has a smaller selection of products in its stores. It stocks, on average, between 10,000 to 12,000 unique products or SKUs, while a supercenter like Walmart would have around 60,000 SKUs, for example.

Carrying a limited number of items gives Dollar General more buying power with its suppliers as it buys fewer types of products in bulk.

There’s a Family Dollar near my office that closed back in August, they’re added on to the building, nearly doubling its size, and are opening one of these Family Dollar/Dollar Tree combos any day now. I’m quite curious to see what exactly the difference is.

and discount competition like Temu have also impacted their sales.

Calling bs on this part. The only reason anyone goes to a dollar store is because they have positioned themselves to be convenient, especially in more rural areas. You go there for something you need quickly. Temu is for cheap shite that you can wait a month to get.

They should do this with all the stores and shorten the name to Family Dollar Tree. Everything you could get at Dollar Tree for 1.25, plus other items at Family Dollar prices.

It's wild how many dollar generals there are in the rural South. You can drive like 10 miles and see 3 houses but 5 dollar general stores.

And they all do well.

I've been in Family Dollar stores long enough to buy CD's.

Last year they had new wrapped CD's for one or two dollars. And they were good titles like Van Halen, KISS, Pink Floyd, Beatles.

They don't have them anymore.

Exactly, I have a cabin in a very rural town in middle Tennessee. They just converted to the combo type style store, it’s ok. It used to be a Fred’s which I really liked, I miss my Fred’s, haha.

They literally have a family dollar /dollar tree combo store ( aka dolla holler) across the street from a dollar general near me. They also have 3 dollar stores in a 15 mile stretch.

do not believe this to be accurate as I have not seen any video on WorldStar showing theft at a Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, or Dollar General.

Its not flash mob thefts worthy of worldstar

Trash just pick up a few items and walk out nonchalantly. It is their daily shopping.

There's a DG Market and a Family Dollar in the nearest little town to me (200 people). The DG Market is nicer, and has a reasonable food selection. The Family Dollar was first, and it is not as nice. But, there is stuff you can buy. It is nice to not have to drive a distance if you run out of a basic item.

Not quite true, the Dollar Tree selection is compromised. Can't get my $1.25 Brim's Red Hot skins at the combo store, they're selling big brands at the regular prices in the Family Dollar section. I'm sure there are other examples, but this is the one that impacts me.

Dollar General is a fierce competitor to Walmart. Walmart started building more neighborhood markets and less supercenters

They are like roaches, I've seen them in rural communities between populations of 50 and 100.
