Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar in 2015, but Family Dollar was a bigger mess than they anticipated, and nearly nine years later, they are still trying to straighten out the mess and fully integrate Family Dollar into the Dollar Tree brand.

Family Dollar will close 600 stores in the next few months, with 370 stores closing within the next couple of years as their leases expire. Dollar Tree will close 30 stores.

These discount stores have seen an uptick in shoppers recently, but the average shopper is spending less money per visit. Trashy stores and discount competition like Temu have also impacted their sales.

Another huge factor:
quote:

Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Dollar General and other discount stores have had longstanding theft issues, operating stores with just a handful of employees who have at times been victims of violent robberies and other crimes.

I was in one yesterday and when you walk in, there are huge posters of photos of the thieves.

I asked the very grouchy lady behind the counter what they do if the same people come back in. She said "they don't pay me enough to tackle 'em "

It's wild how many dollar generals there are in the rural South. You can drive like 10 miles and see 3 houses but 5 dollar general stores.

More like a "Hunnit Tree". Inflation has hit the dollar stores too.

Wherever I first saw this, the top comment was something like, 70 people are set to lose their jobs.

I was going to say she’d get fired if she tried, but dollar stores are usually the Wild West, and they don’t have typical HR rules or policies. Anything goes.

Yeah they’re everywhere. Our local one appears to be unstaffed most of the time since it got self checkout.

It's the only store you can go into and never see a single employee the whole time there.

Since Family Dollar and Dollar General are usually across the street from each other, this makes sense.

Since this is thread #2 on this...

Folks, they are opening as many stores as they close.
They don't need both labels in the same geographic area, so they are closing some and remodeling or opening with the new side by side store formats that have both FD and DT in the same building.

They are a customer of mine. They aren't reducing forecasts like WMT and TGT have been doing.

Time will tell.

I have been in one once. Team Dollar General all the way. The more haphazard the store is the better.

I do not believe this to be accurate as I have not seen any video on WorldStar showing theft at a Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, or Dollar General. This isn't Waffle House.

This is the truth. A few years back I had a statewide job in Georgia where I had to travel throughout the state frequently and every little hick town had at least one dollar store. Many would have a dollar store but not one stoplight

Dollar General was literally the reason that they expanded EBT because they don't carry good produce so the government said that not enough access to produce was available.

You can knock on how many DG's there are, but i've stayed in many rural areas camping and for work and its damn nice having a DG for the basics that is 1/2 the distance as the next grocery store.

I've driven past these but not gone in one. What is the point of this? Are the two that different?
