My advice is to take the most convenient flight. Do not try to take some 5am flight. Sometimes if you are going cross country a midway stopping point is nice to let everyone in the family get a stretch. Be mindful of weather and time or year for any brief layover. Buy a third seat eve if you hold baby entire time.
Bring enough carryon so that you can spend night in hotel if a flight gets delayed or cancelled. Always overpack diapers with a six month old. I spent 21 hours in Houston with a six month old and we had trouble finding diapers to buy after running low. Extra baby clothes always. Somebody will always puke at the most inopportune time.

It gets easier once they hit 2-2.5.
You may be anti screen time now, but once you get on a plane with a 2 year old, you will be a big fan

95% of people don’t care if a baby makes noise traveling or in restaurants. They are just glad they don’t have a screaming baby.
We have all been there and we don’t care.
But we do care if you bring a baby to a movie.
That is not a kids movie.

Yeah. I mean we did it and he was well behaved in terms of not bugging people around us. But we were constantly trying to wrangle him in our row, he’d squirm in our laps, it was worse on us that the people around us. Once he got to be closer to 2 then an iPad/iPhone and kids videos kept him entertained and he was back to being pretty easy.

You may want to consider buying a seat rather than the baby flying for free while sitting on your lap for a cross country flight. This will allow you to strap in the car seat and give the baby a more comfortable place to sleep.

It will be a lot easier at 6 months than it will be when they’re walking or more mobile. We flew with my 9 month old recently, and it was a giant pain in the arse. He wanted to stand on our laps & bite the head rest in front of us. When he wasn’t stereotypically trying to kick the seat back or scream like a banshee because he wanted to crawl around. Thankfully, he fell asleep right around takeoff for both flights, but ugh. It made me not want to fly anywhere again anytime soon.
My biggest advice is to buy the baby her own seat, and bring her car seat on the plane. It will be a lot easier if you have a place to contain her than it is if she’s on your laps.
Flying is about as glamorous as a Greyhound bus these days, so try not to worry about her crying or making noise. Just do what you can to keep her from physically bothering the people around you, and that’s all you can do.

Experience traveling with a 6 month old, any advice?
Don't.

We did this for one flight. It was a longer red eye flight we took. He was ~16 months at the time. He spent exactly 0 minutes in the car seat and screamed when we tried to put him in it.
We held him as he slept all night. I was awake for 36 hours that day

Only advice I have is to buy direct flight (get there as fast as possible), buy the baby a seat so you have 3 continuous seats together, and bring anything you have that will help the baby to sleep on the flight (car seat, white noise, blanket, pacifier, etc.)
Believe it or not, most people out there have had kids and nobody will care that much if your baby starts getting fussy or crying for a bit especially if you are making an attempt to soothe the baby. Wouldn't worry about the people out there who are actively angry about sharing a plane with other people....they should book a private jet if thats what they think a $300 flight entitles them to.

I was thinking there’s no way after 6 months I could have gotten away with the car seat in the seat thing. It was great at 6 months though.
My child is about as independent as a child can get these days, so I lol at the thought of keeping her contained on an airplane
I would still buy the seat for her anyway, just to have the row to ourselves and have room for all of her stuff, even if she somehow agreed to sit in our laps for longer than 5 minutes

Took my 3 month old on a flight to Vegas back in January and took him at 6 months to New Orleans in April,
Pretty seamless other than something about the cabin pressure on take off, he always shits

With the obligatory, check with your pediatrician first. Outside of unknow health conditions unknown to OT, they will most likely just go off of this chart

When we flew with my dude at 2.5 years old we brought the carseat on and he rode in it like a champ. Plus it was nice to already have it for the rental car. The worst part was having to haul it around the airport.

Flying with a 6 month old is waaaaaay easier than flying with a 18mo - 2yo kid. Feed them when ascending or descending and they'll sleep thereafter.

In my recent experience, the average child is less annoying than the average adult air traveler.

It’s not bad if you can time the naps so he is sleeping during the majority of the flight. Best advice is to have a bottle ready for take off and landing. Helps with the pressure adjustment.

I hear that.
There was a turn about 8 mo where mine went from happy but chill to happy and wanting to get into everything. Plus, she's really unreasonable. It's like she doesn't fully understand English.

This reminds me.
Check EVERYTHING!
We tried carrying on everything, we tried carrying on only stroller and bags.
The easiest thing is to check everything possible. It sucks being a pack mule through ATL rushing to make your connection.
Airlines let you check baby related stuff for free too.

Mine has been walking since she was a week shy of 10 months old, and she HATES being strapped into anything. I have to put on a small musical production every time I have to get her into the car seat, stroller, high chair, etc. just to distract her from the fact that she’s being strapped in once we get moving, she’s okay for a while though. She hates snuggling, lap-sitting, etc. so I laugh to think about air travel. But if an opportunity comes up, we will wing it and just hope for the best. Maybe turn on a screen or something.
