I'll echo you are over thinking this.

Also, if you've seriously thought of placing the opinion/minor inconvenience of a bunch of strangers on a plane over your 6 month old and wife you should really rethink your priorities and motivations. Then go apologize to your wife for even floating the idea of her and baby enduring a cross country drive just so you don't have to feel awkward on a plane.

You just need to do it. Everyone will get over it. Obviously you need to bring things that keep a 6 month old occupied as best you can but that's a limited set of things. I would travel in the middle of the day if you're concerned about others. Early morning and late night have more sleepers IMO

Just fly. Give the baby a bottle when you get in the air so the baby’s ears pop due to pressure change in the cabin.

You had better try that beadryl on your kid before getting on a flight! It can get a kid jacked the F up and not drowsy. Trust me!

Also, noise canceling headphones don't do anything for diaper poop!

I recently flew with me 6 month old daughter and it was pretty easy. Book an early flight if you can and give her a bottle right before takeoff. She’ll sleep most of the entire flight.

We travelled several times on a plane when mine were young. If they are well behaved in a grocery store, they will be fine on a plane. You cannot get around the air pressure/turbulence though. We gave our kids something to eat as place was landing to help with that

A drove an almost four month old from New Orleans to the middle of Colorado during January. Was pretty damn easy. She slept most of the drive. Just would fuss about needing food.

IMO noise canceling headphones are a must for airline travel. You really can’t complain anymore about babies with how good these headphones are.

1) Have him/her drinking a bottle during take off and landing to help with the ears

2) Fly around his nap/sleep time. We always flew early morning flights because that's when our son would be sleeping.

3) Obviously bring toys that he/she likes on the plane to keep them occupied

Only things I can add to this post is if your child is close to the next size diaper; give them a quick change right before you board and put them in the bigger diaper; then change when you land. And, if they take a pacifier, make sure you have several. You obviously want to have back-ups in case one falls out.

We flew to and from Colorado with our 6 month old (at the time) child last year. I was really nervous to do it, but it was totally fine. We bought a plane ticket for her and strapped the car seat in (facing backwards) to the seat, which they recommend for safety purposes. We strolled her around during the layover and changed her in the airport and plane bathrooms, which are equipped with changing tables. As others have mentioned, Benadryl and Tylenol (if teething) can be your friends. We didn’t have to use them in the end, but I did pack them in the diaper bag just in case. She slept for most of it; I think much like the car, an airplane can lull a baby to sleep. It’s definitely worth it to schedule the flight around a nap time if you can swing it. Make sure the baby is sucking on something like a pacifier or bottle with a little juice for an extra incentive during takeoff and landing for the pressure change. Bring toys for entertainment; there is a cheap Baby Einstein radio toy that she loved at that time. If all else fails you can use an iPad or iPhone to entertain the baby, but we were anti-screen so did not resort to that either. And finally, as someone else said, babies cry. People get over it. And all parents have been there and will have sympathy for you if the baby cries good luck! It’s definitely worth flying over driving long distances.

BTW would recommend buying the cheapest umbrella stroller you can find for this; that way, if you need to ditch the stroller at gate check with a tight layover you can. We had to do this and the sweet airline people called me to report that they had it and delivered it to my house

You can’t give that to a 6 month old. The label starts at 6.

When my son was six months old, we flew from Sydney, Australia to New Orleans via Tokyo and Dallas. We had a 24 hour layover in Japan. To be honest, it wasn't that bad. He slept for the Sydney-Tokyo leg, slept some in Tokyo, but was awake for most of the long haul between Tokyo and Dallas. But he was a good baby. The air pressure thing didn't seem to bother him. Just make your you have the formula powder pre-measured and enough bottles and diapers and a few changes of clothes. In other words, you or your wife will have to sacrifice your carry-on bag to bring the baby's crap. This was a round-trip deal. The jet lag was a much bigger issue - it took him a couple of weeks to adjust. Make sure you have the pacifiers and teething stuff too.

Five hours is nothing.

Now, when we did that flight (minus the Japan layover) for the second and final time, he was almost two and that was a pain in the arse. This was one-way back to Louisiana.

EDIT: One more tip...if you have one of those state-of-the-art cadillac baby strollers, leave it. Buy the most bare-basics one safe for a six month old to use because you'll have to haul and pack that sucker around.

EDIT 2: Also, see if they'll give you a bulk head seat. We had one and they have these bassinets that click on the back of the bulkhead for the baby to sleep in. That could depend on the type of aircraft, though. This was a big 777.

EDIT 3: At take-off and landing, have them sucking on the pacifier. That is supposed to help with the air pressure thing.

Sure you can.

Just give them less than you would a 6 year old.

We traveled with two of these (enough to make 6 bottles total).

We flew all the time with our first child. It was easy when he was 6 months. They don’t do anything. They sleep and only cry when they are hungry. They don’t have a desire to move and they don’t really cry for no reason. A bottle or pacifier or a tit is enough to keep them happy.

Now once he was 12-18 months? Total pain in the arse because they want to move, phones, toys, coloring books don’t keep them occupied and they don’t understand why they can’t just walk around.
