Thankfully, I own a home and don’t have to worry about this personally, but I know people who are struggling to find an affordable apartment in a safe area. Then, on top of that, paying for utilities, wi-fi, etc.

Even studio apartments are pricey, from what they’ve told me. The days of them being in the range of $500-$600 a month are a thing of the past.

It sucks that people have to pay out their arse for affordable, semi-quality apartments in a decent area. I get it, everything has gone up. This is America damn it. People have a right to housing that is not gonna cost them an arm and a leg.

Anyone have any stories of getting caught in the quagmire of trying to find housing in 2024?

Uh, I was paying more than $500/ month over twenty years ago.

About to ask where this is? 1000 a month here won't even get you a studio in the bad parts of town.

Depends on the financial situation. For a lot of people, this could definitely be expensive. And again, $1000 is at the bottom. More often than not, people are paying way more than that.

I’ll even go further… my college apartment, Sharlo on brightside( now called retreat at brightside or something) was $450/month in 1996.

Burbank Commons even in the mid 00s when I was in college was like $400 per person. Had 3 roommates so total for the unit was like $1600 but still a 4 BR 2 Ba for $1600 is probably a unicorn now.

I remember I moved to a large city in the south and was told how cheap housing was and yada yada yada.

And then I looked into it and, sure, housing was cheap. If you want to live in a craphole. Otherwise, even mediocre housing was just as expensive as anywhere outside of NYC and California.

One of my coworkers who was new with me chose the "cheap housing in bad area route." She lasted a year or so until she couldn't take the lack of safety anymore and moved.

I think that's largely the norm in America nowadays. You either pay ridiculously high rent for mediocre accommodations or you risk car break ins, home invasions, and shootings living in a bad neighborhood.

Paid $800 for a swanky 2 bedroom at highland plantation in 2005. Had a pitbull walk in my apartment one night, take a shite on the carpet, and then walk right back out.

I remember in 1993 My 2 bedroom apartment in Hammond was $400 a month. I told my 75 year old grandfather and he said “ what are you living in a god damn mansion.” lol old man hadn’t had a house note in 25 years and had no idea what shite cost.

My comment wasn’t meant to be the typical OT “my butler lives in a mansion where rent is $50k/mo” comment. It’s just that $1000 is incredibly cheap for housing unless you have two roommates also paying $1000 each.

I don’t know where this person is expecting to live, but you’re not going to find much if anything at that price point.

It’s amazing how dumb most people are when it comes to understanding what a “right” is in America.

Depends on the area…

$1000 in BR is very different from $1000 in NYC, SF, LA, etc.

I agree with you. There should be zero reason a working person can’t afford to buy a home or find reasonable rent. They have the right to have a slice of the American dream of homeownership. And close to $1,000, and up, for a standard 1 bedroom is ridiculous. Definitely in Louisiana for that rent. I’m so grateful I own my home.
