Do not buy 3 additional tires. That is total BS. You shouldn’t expense the tire replacement as that is part of your mileage wear and tear.

One can't (shouldn't?) be too pedantic with proverbs but it would be more correct if the saying was "You can't keep your cake and eat it too".

If the other three tires are relatively new, replacing one will not hurt. Worse case replace two of them. Sounds like your tire guy is a scam artist.
1200 for four tires isn't crazy. The last set I put on my truck were like 2600.

Get a new tire and shave it do match.

Different tread depths mean the tire rotated different amount of times per mile.
Wears out spider gears in differential.
People who don't realize this have to be a major source of headaches and rolled eyes at tire shops.

If that was true why do Subarus come with donut spares?
There's a fuse labeled AWD you're specifically instructed by Subaru to remove if you use the donut.
ETA actually you insert a fuse to turn off AWD, but the concept is the same. Don't run a donut on a Subaru with AWD on.

and because it’s an AWD car, I have to replace all 4 in order to keep the different tread levels from messing up the drivetrain (atleast that’s what tire guy and Google said, and tire guy is legit, not usually a shithead).

So you had to drive 2000 miles to get your tire fixed.. sounds right to me.

Plug the nail hole, expense employer for new replacement tire, profit.
I’ve plugged THE sidewall before for 20k miles so do not give me any shite about the “hole is too close to the sidewall” sales pitch.

I would go with option 1 and only. Plug the tire yourself and don't allow the tire place to steal your money. If I were your supervisor I would tell you that when I rejected your expense report.

I don't think he's talking about taxes - I think he's talking about reimbursement from his employer.

Been in construction industry for 30+ years. Learned a long time ago to carry road hazard warranty on my tires.
Ran over something last summer that sloshed my side wall. Tire was just over a month old. Road hazard covered the tire.
