If the object really is Planet Nine, it would be larger than Neptune and exist 700 times further from the sun than Earth.

quote:

Planet Nine is a hypothesized massive planet, first proposed in 2014, that is speculated to orbit far out in the solar system. It has not been detected formally. Instead, astronomers have inferred its presence from perceived perturbations of the orbits of some Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs). The planet is estimated to be 2 to 4 times the radius, and about ten times the mass of the Earth. (Image credit: Mark Garlick/Science Photo Library/Getty Images)

quote:

The best candidate yet for the elusive Planet Nine has been spotted in two deep infrared surveys taken 23 years apart. If this mystery object really is Planet Nine, it would have a mass greater than Neptune, and currently be about 700 times farther from the sun than Earth is.

The possibility of additional planets in our solar system has been proposed many times, going under names such as "Planet X," because experts thought the concept of an extra planet in our vicinity of the cosmos could explain a perceived regularity in mass extinctions on Earth. Perhaps, they said, the periodic influx of comets that impact Earth are pushed our way by an unseen planet. However, the supposed periodicity in mass extinctions has not held up to scrutiny, and so the need for that particular Planet X has gone away. This brings us to Planet Nine.

Planet Nine is unrelated to the Planet X concept, and rather put forward in 2016 by Michael Brown and Konstantin Batygin of the California Institute of Technology to explain an unusual bunching of orbits of some objects in the Kuiper Belt, such as Sedna. This proposed Planet Nine would be more massive than Earth, and orbit on a highly eccentric path that takes it hundreds of astronomical units from the sun (one astronomical unit is the distance between Earth and the sun). That far away, it would be extremely difficult to detect.

The problem with Pluto is that there is another body out past Neptune, Eris, that's just about the same size and there are thousands of more objects out that way that can be considered minor planets so you can't logically just call Pluto a full-sized planet and not others.

Wut? That might have been a side hypothesis but the core of Planet X has always trying to explain oddities in Uranus and Neptune. It’s part of why Pluto was rushed to be designated a planet. They all went “aha! That is it!”

It’s kinda scary revisionist disinformation is present even talking about science topics from space.com. That whole paragraph I quoted is almost completely made up. Planet Nine as a concept is a thing, but it’s just an attempt to package the Planet X idea in the modern world with new evidence, without the 200 years of public perception baggage of “Planet X”

Pure PR, not that Planet X was disproven.

It's not the distance; it's the size and "odd" orbit. Pluto is smaller than Earth's moon and orbits on a different plane that, literally, every other planet. "Planet 9" is significantly larger than Pluto, but also orbits on a different plane, so it (hypothetically) would be up for a fair bit of debate regarding whether it would be deemed to be a planet.

ETA: Depiction of weird orbit:

frick those sons-of-bitches for what they did to Pluto. One of the great sins of our times.

Orbital incline wasn’t why Pluto lost the title. It was because it “didn’t clear the neighborhood.”

If Pluto and Charon had collided Pluto would have definitely remained as a planet.

Pluto doesn’t satisfy the “clears its orbital path” requirement of planethood

The plane of the orbit has nothing to do with whether something is a planet or not.

Requirements are: orbits a star, nearly spherical in shape, and clears its orbit of other debris. That’s it. A body could be on a plane that is 90 degrees different from all the other planets and still be a planet.

ETA: I should’ve read the whole thread before replying. Couldn’t help myself

Yeah, I remember talking about and even calling it Planet X in school in the '70s.
