The development of River Oaks, one of Houston’s ritziest neighborhoods, can be traced to 1924. That’s when brothers Will and Mike Hogg, sons of a former Texas governor, started buying property surrounding the then-new River Oaks Country Club, a rural outpost west of Houston. The Hoggs, along with their business partner Hugh Potter, envisioned a residential community with strict deed restrictions on architectural standards and a private tax to support upkeep. As Houston grew, River Oaks found itself centrally-located within the Interstate 610 loop. Today the 1,100-acre area provides residents with a short commute to work downtown, not to mention a private security force that patrols the area.

Membership to have
The River Oaks Country Club, established in 1923, has a Donald Ross-designed golf course that was renovated by Tom Fazio in 2016. The club’s tennis complex hosts the yearly U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship tournament, which is a professional-level tournament.

Event of the year
The River Oaks Garden Club was established in 1927; today it has more than 400 members. The organization works on several annual events, one of which is the Azalea Trail, an 84-year-old spring tradition featuring a handful of home and garden tours throughout the community.

I honestly would not want a home so big. in fact to me they’re more of a house than a home.

I'd take just the pool house and pool in the last pic and be happy.

That set-in pool design and landscaping is awesome.

I’ve been in a few of these. It’s just like a regular house except there will be like 5 sitting rooms.

The money actually came from oil. Hogg family was pretty philanthropic, as well.

Can you imagine how much grass would get in that pool when you got in. No thanks.

I don’t understand rich people building big beautiful houses with tiny pools

I'd take it, but I'd want to read over the HOA covenants first

Now that is unfortunate!

River Oaks is a great area, but not all the homes are like this.. i’d say *most* homes in RO would be considered mansions, but there are a lot of more ‘regular’ houses as well.. i sold my (non-mansion) home 3 or 4 years ago, right before the latest oil & gas downturn, and made $70k profit after realtor fees, etc.. glad i got out when i did.

Even though i’d never live in Houston again by choice, if i ever had to- RO would be the only place i’d live.. it’s the perfect combo of being in a nice neighborhood, but also being very close t the city.

I'd love to get a behind-the-scenes view of these girls' lives. It has to involve fricking a ton of guys for money and free shite. They're not making their money posting their arse on Instagram.
