quote:

A growing number of high-school seniors in the North are making an unexpected choice for college: They are heading to Clemson, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Alabama and other universities in the South.

Students say they are searching for the fun and school spirit emanating from the South on their social-media feeds. Their parents cite lower tuition and less debt, and warmer weather. College counselors also say many teens are eager to trade the political polarization ripping apart campuses in New England and New York for the sense of community epitomized by the South’s football Saturdays. Promising job prospects after graduation can sweeten the pot.

The number of Northerners going to Southern public schools went up 84% over the past two decades, and jumped 30% from 2018 to 2022, a Wall Street Journal analysis of the latest available Education Department data found.

This flow of students to Southern colleges promises to impact the region’s economy for years. About two-thirds of college graduates go on to work in the same state where they graduate, according to a recent study from researchers at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and others. The transplants are well-educated, motivated young workers at the least expensive points in their careers.

Northern kids saw how the south was open during covid and they weren't. They also see normal kids who go to northern school get in trouble over dumb stuff like drinking in the dorms but crazies are living in a tent in the school common area chanting death to jews and nothing is happening to them while that garbage is not tolerated in the south.

The trend will continue

I have a few ole miss friends and they said the times they’ve been to Oxford in the past year or so they’ve seen TONS of New Jersey, New York, etc car tags.

Heck, I even saw a “jersey Rebs” tailgate tent in the grove. All these yankee girls/guys want the standard southern Greek culture and football

The south has better weather, is more fun, and isn’t filled with pretentious assholes.

No shite that’s appealing to college kids.

That was over 4 years ago. What does this have to do with college enrollment going forward?

From my understanding, there's a very large population of Jewish New York students at Tulane.

They're coming. That's what the article said.

They stay, and bring their ideas that made their states undesirable.

That's fine as long as they leave their bullshite politics up north and don't try to poison the south with more of that than we already have.

While I agree, applications at Northern universities are up as well. It's just, on average, more difficult to get into a northern school.

Also, many colleges in the North are closing due to declining enrollment. In the South, with Judson and Birmingham-Southern notable exceptions, not so much.
