Fascinating story. Dan Carlin did probably my favorite one off Hardcore History on it called
Prophets of Doom

Highly recommend it.

Anyway, spoiler alert, the anabaptists' coup fails after a year of violence, bloodshed and cannibalism.
The Prince-bishop's troops battered down the walls using cannons with names like "The Devil." and "His Mother."

After the siege was over, Jan Van Leiden, the leader of the movement, was publicly executed over 6 hours. Using tongs heated in a brazier, they ripped chunks of his skin out, methodically, to maximize pain and suffering.

If the condemned passed out, they would revive them and resume the torture.

They ripped off his genitals and burned them. He and his cohorts were slowly torn to bits, then executed with a dagger to the heart to finish them...but it was not over.

Once the torture and execution were complete, their bodies were loaded into cages and hoisted 40 feet in the air from St. Lambert's Church, where they desiccated and rotted, until nothing but their bones remained.

These cages hung with the skeletons of the condemned for centuries, a grisly reminder of the fate that awaited those who might follow in their footsteps.

A short video on it.

Just a fascinating piece of history.

And you're saying this should be done to the creator of The View?

Watching The View is a far crueler torture than even the most sadistic minds could concoct.

Yes, and I desperately want Quentin Tarantino to make a movie or miniseries based on it. That movie would be one of the greatest films of all time and his masterpiece if he made it.

Lawyers would argue they had rights and this was cruel and unusual punishment.

Didn’t he charge the besieging army armed with cannons over an open field?

Guy was a true believer I guess

Rather die like that than get tortured I guess.

I believe this was also the siege where some of the besiegers got so drunk, they thought the sunset was the sunrise, charged into battle prematurely, then got slaughtered in the dark for their efforts.

To be fair, he tasted success too early.

But, yes, I agree.

Always seems weird how normalized torture and gore were for regular folks in times past. You just want to go to church and some skinless, castrated dude is just rotting in a cage above the door.

Stuff like this is one of the reasons the founding fathers put that in our constitution.

I really didn’t enjoy this HH, some people say it’s his best. Different folks for different strokes I guess
