I've not only seriously considered it, but I've done it. Moved to Beijing for 3 years after school.

I visited an expat bar when I was in Beijing back in '06. The guys there loved it.

I believe you have to still pay U.S. taxes if you live abroad unless you renounce your U.S. citizenship.

It's a bit more complex than that.

If you are a US citizen you're allowed to exclude a little over $100K from income tax, and also get a credit for tax you pay to the overseas government. So unless you have a high income it isn't that big a deal.

The problem is that the US tax laws require even foreign banks to report on your deposits, and foreign companies to report your income. This is a strong disincentive for them to want to deal with you at all. If I'm a local bank in a rustic village in France, I'll do whatever I can to not have a US customer.

You could probably find work with a major company that has the HR resources for it, but a small shop? Forget it.

I lived in Costa Rica on and off for 14 years. I love it, but would rather be a US citizen.

It was fun, but it got old after a while. Definitely had a great time since they let expats do whatever the frick they want over there, except incite a protest.

Nice, mine’s from Pathum Thani, just north of Bangkok. Actually made the trip out there for the first time in november. It was amazing!

I moved to Mexico for about a year to cut grass for a living. Thought it be funny to flip the script on them. Turns out it wasn't that lucrative. Made 6 figures, but it was in pesos.
