I had 5 CT scans and 3 MRIs in a month, imagine what that would have cost without decent insurance

We have a 256 slice. Also many other factors that determine price like software package. Neuro/ cardiac packages.

First off, the ACA marketplace is not "free" in most cases. The medicaid expansion, if anything, is what you're referring to.

But ya know what, be it medicaid or medicare, recipients aren't paying anywhere close to the bloated prices we pay. Ya know why? Because the government doesn't frick around....this is what we're going to pay you for procedure A, this is what we'll pay for procedure B, this is what we'll pay for medication C. There's no middleman, like an insurance company, trying to make a profit. Hospitals can't rape and pillage medicare and medicaid customers, but they sure can rape private insurance holders.

Wouldn't it be cool if we ALL had the bargaining power of the US government to set healthcare prices? Wouldn't it be great to remove a completely unnecessary middleman from the healthcare equation? Wouldn't it be great not to have to work a job you hate just because of the insurance plan they provide?

Oh yeah, that's "socialist". Can't do that!

ETA: We're the only industrialized nation on Earth without government ran healthcare. It's no accident that we also pay something like 10x any other industrialized country for our healthcare. And with where healthcare is at today, don't even try to tell me you get worse care in Canada or Japan.

Eliminate the fee for service payment model and replace it with one that actually reimburses payments for outcomes not just services.

That’s actually more of an insurance problem than a problem with the medical industry.

I promise doctors would rather be able to treat patients how they feel is best to get the best outcomes. It’s the insurance companies who try to dictate care and only allow reimbursement for certain services not the outcomes.

How would you handle reimbursement for noncompliant patients?

I will tell you from experience that if at all possible shop around at local imaging centers and see what their prices are. If you don’t live near a large metropolitan area you are probably out of luck on finding good prices.

If this is your first big ticket medical expense for the year, you probably haven’t met your deductible. I had govt employee insurance and got hit hard by those sort of medical expenses with some lower leg injuries from sports a couple times.

You might be able to find a third party imaging center that can do it for a fraction of the cost outside of the hospital. We had a scan done for 10% of the TX Children's Hospital price at an imaging center in The Woodlands.

Personally, I'd suggest an alternate injury.

It doesn’t hurt your credit as much anymore I’ve got 2 hospital bills totaling around $2500 that shows on my credit and mine is still upper 700’s.

I pay my primary doctors bills but hospital bills nope

The frick are you talking about? Medicare paid out more than $100 billion in fraud and waste in 2021. That is over 6% of Medicare and Medicaid total spending. If you really think that the government is not getting raped then would you like to hear about my Pacific Ocean front property for sale in Utah?

Always sucked. Didn't suck quite as much before 2010.

This reminds me of the furniture thray. You pay for a Rolls and get a Pinto.

Find out what usual and customary (U&C) is and offer 75% of UC. You shouldn't be paying more than about $600 max regardless of with or w/o contrast.

It depends on which plan and/or provider you’re enrolled in. Ours is 100% reimbursement for any ‘event’ over $400. There’s no annual deductible to be met. A cash price must be paid for any medical expense. That’s it. We pay $550 for a family of 5.

The other half is fatties. 30 years ago, when insurance premiums were low, we had little to no premiums and deductibles were fractions of today. The cost of health insurance has expanded (pun) at the same rate as obesity.

Because 30 years ago insurance companies could rate you and even deny coverage. Now there is no rating and no coverage denial.

Actually... if you get your insurance through the marketplace, you can go off marketplace and buy a rated plan that actually will be considerably cheaper, provided you have no pre-existing conditions and they rate you well.

FYI you can normally google "affordable _____" procedure there's usually some affordable options that have contracts with the government for a set cash price.

Like for colonoscopies there's two in the state that do the procedure and any biopsies for $1400 out of pocket cash. You set up an appointment ahead of time, pay the amount, get the procedure done, get the results, can schedule a follow-up, and it's a done deal. Nothing is done regarding your insurance but it also doesn't go towards your deductible (obviously)

Awesome. Ours used to be $400 for any event but they went up to $1k

Still, a lot cheaper than 2 to 6k deductibles and then insurance only pays 40-60%. My buddy told everyone about it on fb when he posted a reimbursement check to him for around $30k when his wife had cancer. I was like wow.

I have the Gold plus Brothers Keeper.

The $1000 deductible is per incident, not per year. Which is good if a course of treatment runs past January but not as good if you have two different issues.

In either case better than traditional insurance.
