Essence Fest and New Orleans clash over payments and contract

The future of the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans is uncertain as festival organizers and city officials remain at odds over outstanding payments and other contract terms. Essence Fest says its intention is to stay in New Orleans, but disagreements over money and vendor payments have raised questions about whether Essence Fest will return.

New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno is also expressing frustration over stalled negotiations, saying it feels like they're "going around in circles". One major point of contention involves payments to festival vendors. The mayor said she became concerned after hearing reports that some vendors still have yet to be paid.
“It’s an existential threat if we are being moved out of our house without knowing it and we have no place to go and what we cannot do is have that institution and not have a place to be," Kirk McDonald, CEO of Sundial Media Group — the organization that puts on Essence Fest, said Thursday.

Once we started to find out from some vendors that they once again hadn't been paid, and that to me was very problematic. And some of these vendors, we're talking about local companies, and these are not large businesses. These are local companies that really need those dollars," she told us Thursday

The very idea that they were belligerent, while also being deadbeats is very surprising.

And they blamed it on the city haven’t paying the festival yet even though the city paid them in July. Sounds like they are full of shite and hopefully move to Atlanta.

It's them again isn't it?

Essence doesn’t want to pay…isn’t that the what always happens?

Could they hold the festival on a Carnival Cruise ship?

Let them go to another city. Maybe we can have a more inclusive event for all people on the Fourth of July in New Orleans instead of catering to the colored folks.

Be honest, what kind of other event and how many people would attend during July in Nola?
Essence, until recently, was a good event for the city and most of the out of town people who came were classier and spent a lot more money than the Bayou Classic crowd.
It has started going downhill in the last five years or so.

Looks like restaurants are going to have to start opening on 4th of July weekend again.

Moreno should tell Essence to hit the road. Please go to Houston or Atlanta or anywhere. Deadbeats, haven’t paid the vendors and want alot of funding from the city. Bye.

It used to have some good musical acts and such. The time around July 4th is just dead as shite in the city and it was a decent bump in tourism.

Federal NGO funding dried up and now we can't have Essence?
Where will the race baiters get their next meal?
