He could be a good football player but decides he wants to “take a stand” instead.

Is he saying we should have donated that money to the nation of islam instead?
Perhaps each player in college could be afforded one knee pad with that money.

It just looks funny when one is talking about academics and scholarships and typing sentences like, "Dont u think so 2"
I see white Christians visiting Africa spending a year or more trying to help the natives. I hear a lot of mouthy African Americans athletes bitching about conditions here in America. Why don't they visit their ancestral land, and as President Trump has suggested, fix places that truly need help.
We are doing just fine minding our business without their advice.

simply wish Eric a good day and STFU...

Such bullshite from him. LSU is one of the very few athletic departments that have revenue streams and/or donations to fund something like this. Facilities like this are a huge recruiting tool.
He's saying that these young guys are risking their health and future earnings to entertain you every Saturday night and they should be paid for their work dummy.

They are getting paid. They are getting a free education at an institution that they probably would of never been accepted to if they couldn’t run fast

And he is aiming at the wrong organization over it.
He can kneel his happy arse down to Indiana in front of Mark Emmert’s desk and argue his case.

I do not disagree with this.
Has LSU tried to get donations to fix the roof?
I know they got donors to help with the new Business complex, the new Patrick Taylor, and the new Foundation Building.
It seems to me that LSU hasn’t made fixing the roof a priority since they haven’t repaired it themselves or started a fund raiser to go it. They must have other projects that are more important.

I suddenly have a strong desire to troll TF out of Eric Reid.

Posted this on the SEC rant thread, but if we are being honest with ourselves, this arms race of newer better facilities is pretty ridiculous.
The money spent on sports facilities, locker rooms, etc is mind boggling. Every school is doing it. And to no end. Rarely does it enable you to do anything other than keep up with the other guy.
Millions and millions of dollars spent on things that aren't used 95% of the year. It's fairly absurd when you think about it.

One of his points was if we can get people to donate millions for a locker room, why not millions to fix the library. Which is a fair question.
If TAF was smart they'd publicize doing something like this, every few years at least.

As a former college athlete I can tell you this is far from true. I would say the locker room, field house, and player's lounge are used year round by the majority of players, especially upperclassmen who live off campus and stay through the summer. Why do you think the former lettermen typically earmark their donations to these?
Posted on 7/22/19 at 3:19 pm to tigergirl10
quote:Nope. LSU didn't spend a penny.
LSU just spent $28 million
Private donations to TAF paid for the new locker room.
You're welcome.....

Come on we are talking about LSU, not Harvard. I don't think they should be paid but players should be able to make money off their likeness.

Who is going to setup the contracts, probe businesses to ensure they are legit, keep up with the income, capitalize expenditures, file taxes, etc.? Might as well let them hire an agent too huh?
What if a stud sophomore at TCU gets a "likeness contract" extended by a car dealership in Austin if he transfers?

Please tell me how LSU is going to pay players without breaking NCAA rules? He needs to take up his gripe about players not being paid with the NCAA, not LSU

I agree that there are issues to be addressed but the lazy answer is just to say "damn too many issues can't do it." If the schools wanted to make it happen it would but so far they the don't have an incentive and no one has made them. It will be interesting to see what happens with the California law.

I think many who push the pay players narrative have no idea what it would do. This is Pandora's box. Allowing compensation for their likeness is a very broad term and can be interpreted a litany of ways. The schools compliance department would need to be beefed up or the NCAA compliance department would need to in order to process "requests", after proper vetting the payments would need to be processed and documented, and audits would need to be performed to insure there is no impropriety occurring. Now we've spent money to make sure the student athletes don't lose eligibility or aren't being used in a money laundering scheme, who pays for it? Do you charge the athlete an administrative fee? Charge it back to the University/Athletics Department? Do you cap and limit the earning potential of an athlete? Also need to make sure that offers aren't agreed upon during recruitment or aren't the cause of an athlete entering the transfer portal.
I have yet to see anyone lay out a path to athlete compensation, just general retorts pointing to a handful of schools that make a profit in athletics which neglects the 90% that do not. Or pointing at new buildings, upgrades, or coaches salaries without accounting for the support of donors and use of bonds and foundations that provide that support.
As someone who spent time on both sides of the coin I can say that scholarship athletes have it way better than walk-on's or everyday students. Especially when you consider athletes today get: free tuition, room and board, top flight medical care, stipends, food, nutrition, stipends that cover books and then some, PELL grants (especially in the South), and work opportunities (I've cleaned up stadiums, locker rooms, campus, etc. for work credit to cover costs). I've been there done that and somehow found a way to cover my cost of attendance and still save enough over the summer to have dates/fun when time allowed. It wasn't Ruth's Chris and Perignon, but it was still fun and got the job done more times than not.
