Entergy partnering with smart thermostat companies to partially control temps for credit

Just received an offer from Entergy/Sensi (the company that makes my smart thermostat). I can opt in or out at any time and the offer is as follows:
ETA: Kind of cool because you have the choice but I'll admit it scares me a little that one day everyone may have smart thermostats and this could becomes mandatory. Maybe that makes me paranoid but I am currently reading 1984 and nothing seems off the table

How It Works
If you are an Entergy New Orleans residential or small business electric customer with an eligible Sensi™ thermostat like the Sensi Wi-Fi Programmable Thermostat or the Sensi Touch Wi-Fi Thermostat for cooling, you can earn $25 for enrolling in EasyCool. Plus, you will receive an additional $40 after each season for staying enrolled.
Cut Cost, Not Comfort
Entergy New Orleans will automatically adjust the temperature on the enrolled thermostat by no more than four degrees for no more than four hours when it detects a high-energy-demand event. There will be a maximum of 15 adjustments, and these will occur on non-holiday weekdays. You can opt out of peak energy event adjustments at any time from your mobile device, web browser or thermostat.
Help Your Community
Entergy New Orleans customers like you are enrolling in EasyCool and working together to reduce energy demand while earning rewards.

Democrats just got an idea for one more thing to tack onto their Green New Deal

Step 1: Buy Sensi smart thermostat.
Step 2: Don’t connect it to your actual AC.
Step 3: Enroll
Step 4: Profit?

You people praise 5G because of porn but when our devices start controlling us you'll have to ask yourself if it was worth it.

FUKK NO.
I’d get another thermostat. A dumb one. The fact yours can connect to the internet or they have the option to control it remotely means it can be hacked, and they could force...
Jesus fricking Christ what a time to be alive.
Let me tell you. I’ve got a smart water meter, and the box is locked. We can be charged by tampering with the lid. Meaning we aren’t allowed to open the got damn thing.

Unfortunately it knows if it is connected or not.
But that is exactly what I was thinking.

It’s 70 degrees in this house year round. I don’t care what I have to sell. I’ve slept hot for period in my life. Never again.

My dumb thermostat stays on 71 24/7/365

Austin energy has something similar for my Ecobee. I usually override it because, surprise surprise, they want to adjust the thermostat higher when you want it to really be cooling.

As a rule of thumb, don't trust the city of new orleans to not frick something up.

It would very selfishly depend on what they generally see high demand events. If it's when I'm otherwise at the office (you know, in a post-COVID paradigm), then sure, go for it. If it's generally when I'm home, frick off.

Hard no.
I like my smart thermostat because I can control and program it, not so that someone else can.

Meh. I still swing a hammer better than any device. I'm also nowhere near as susceptible to water ingress or magnets.
