Engineers: Excel, MatLab, both or neither?

Which do you use on the job? Seems like most schools teach engineering students a little of both, but some types of engineers may be more inclined to use Excel over MatLab or vice versa. I would think chemical/civil/mechanical engineers use MatLab more than petroleum, but that's just a guess.

I'm not an engineer but I work with engineers

and we use excel, mostly because it's easier to exchange files with clients and it's cheaper

If people would ever take the time to learn matlab they'd realize excel sucks.

but people tend to fall back on things they know how to use so excel will be the preferred choice of most until a newer generation comes in with the knowledge on how to use better software packages

Civil and I am one of the holdouts who uses a combination of pencil and paper and a couple of excel spreadsheets I've developed over time.

most of the world, even outside of the engineering profession, uses excel. because nearly everyone is familiar with it, it's easy to share, check, and submit information in that format. you give someone calcs that you did in matlab, and they might not even have matlab to open the file or have any idea how to navigate the program to check it or make revisions. you do what your clients expect.

Environmental Engineer here and do lots of Excel because that's what the regulatory agencies want (EPA, TCEQ, NMED, etc...)

Excel, because estimating goes along with engineering.

I don't know what to think of the idea that Excel and MatLab are considered pretty much equivalent.

This. Same thing with CAD. You can learn all the different 3d software in the world but most client will want the work done in whatever software they have

I could do a lot of the basic functions of MatLab with excel when I was in school. All the way up to iterating pretty complex equations. You just had to re-apply your "guess" for each iteration. It was sometimes easier than typing in MatLab code. Obviously you can do more with MatLab, but I've forgotten more about that program than I remember. We exclusively use Excel for everything, but I wouldn't refer to anything done in our office as "real" engineering.

If people would ever take the time to learn Excel (including VBA programming) they'd realize it is better than they think. There aren't many things you can't do with it, although there are easier ways to go about it here and there.
