Endymion just called for the city to form a task force to explore ways to improve safety at parades.

Improve safety?

Mardi Gras is unbelievably safe.

There were two terrible accidents this week.

In the last 50 years you can count similar accidents on one hand.

Nothing coming out of any task force will improve Mardi Gras.

It will harm it.

Why do they stick with tractors for parades? It is not like trucks have become more reliable than tech that is so old.

In places like Houma, they had to switch to trucks because once they built the twin bridges over the intracoastal the floats could no longer be pulled by tractors and trucks were used to replace tractors.

Some of the vehicles they use are Dodge Trucks from Southland Dodge. So, in essence there is a little commercialism is that sense since they are advertising with stickers and probably will have a truck sale in March for some lightly used trucks.

Have you not seen the tractors they use. It’s not like narrow wheeled tractors from the 40’s.

I should have phrased that better, “trucks are better on roads than glorified farm tractors.”

I suggest putting some kind of flexible screen between the section so that no one can get between them. Then, if an accident still occurs, at least they can't blame it on tandem floats. And this will give everyone an out to point to something they are doing to improve safety (which would actually have some truth to it).

My coworker was on the last float. Spent a ton of money for what turned out to be a Tim McGraw concert. He didn't even roll. I'd be livid.

Not sure what tractors they were using but a decent sized tractor well outpulls any truck built for street driving. Tractors have equivalent HP and transmissions with low gearing specifically designed for that task.

I have a solution it is called the drunk screen. It is a flexible metal screen that sits 1 inch above the street level. That way no human sized item would be able to go under floats.

Oh, wait that won't work the streets are too bumpy for that solution to work.

There is an ordinance in place limiting the number of floats. The tandems are a result of the ordinance.

Seems like there should be more krewes? Krewes want more money so keep allowing members even though they legally cannot provide enough floats for them to ride on. Should there be more krewes/parades?

Do you want a bunch of small shitty parades? Because limiting Krewe size is how you get small shitty parades. The mix of Super Krewes to small Krewes is correct. What needs to happen is that LaToya and everyone else needs to calm the frick down and realize that one drunk idiot woman and one freak accident doesn’t equal the need to upset the apple cart. Do nothing right now, let the “Safety Commission” have some meetings and make some simple recommendations and by then everyone will have forgotten.

Tractors have equivalent HP

Seems like most of the tractors pulling floats are in the 70 hp range. The smallest F-150 is 250hp. A 6.7L in a super duty Ford has like 475 hp.
A lot of the tractors have Ag tires that are terrible for traction on pavement. The braking systems on tractors aren’t as sophisticated as trucks today either. I can’t understand why tractors are still used.
Do the drivers not have to have a valid drivers license on the tractors but would in a truck?

The few I have talked to are licensed heavy equipment operators. Not sure that is a prereq though

Also seems more dangerous to use tractor since the operator has to work a clutch pedal and not just brake. Much more control with a diesel pickup than a tractor not to mention the pickup has side mirrors didn’t see that on any of the Endymion tractors. There were several newer John Deere 6105’s but many old shitty tractors. That had been spray painted. Houma got away from tractors years ago due to safety reasons.

What exactly do you think the tractor drivers could have done differently in either of these accidents that a truck driver could have done?

Can’t say the driver had any fault just stating that awareness down the sides and fine movement of the tow may be better in a truck.
