They repeat the same tired trope that black people are committing violent crime because they’re poor and hungry.

Right. The lyrics never even touch on the fact that it's been ingrained in their DNA ever since Cane killed Abel.

Elvis is an honorary black man

He grew up dirt poor in Mississippi and now his house is in the Memphis ghetto

In The Ghetto

Before hearing “In The Ghetto” by Elvis, I heard the Paul Shanklin version “In A Yugo.”

Lets us know we have been dealing with the same societal issues for a long time.

I have come to the conclusion that government nor white people can fix the problem. Those living in the ghetto will have to fix it. It’s the downside of living in a free country. Not everyone uses their freedom to better themselves. Some use freedom to hurt theirselves and neighbors.

would Elvis get a pass today for singing Dixie as part of American Trilogy?

quote:

Well, the world turns And a hungry little boy with a runny nose Plays in the street as the cold wind blows In the ghetto (In the ghetto)

And his hunger burns So he starts to roam the streets at night And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight In the ghetto (In the ghetto)

Then one night, in desperation The young man breaks away He buys a gun, he steals a car Tries to run, but he don't get far And his mama cries As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man Facedown on the street with a gun in his hand

cont: singing.. Swap - in the ghetto - For - and the protests start

And the protest start

ANd the blue haired Karens with their protest signs, blame the white man time after time (and the protests start)

Defund the police you can hear them cry, as another armed robber runs right by (and the protests start)

with 100 people shot and the cops right there, no one saw nuttin but the white man's the problem said the young blue hairs (and the protests start)
