When did a majority of property owners in St. George petition the city parish council to be annexed into the city?
That's the first step that must happen before an area can be annexed.

Even if they did that, it would have been denied. It was a money grab on the part of BR. They wanted the revenue, but were perfectly happy not to provide services for as long as they could.

Business Report - March 2013 (cached)

quote:

Marcelle said she is working with the Parish Attorney’s Office to determine what is involved in expanding the city’s boundaries into certain unincorporated areas of the parish—specifically, Towne Center and Gardere. Marcelle says her proposal would be a way of increasing the city’s property tax revenues, since unincorporated areas are not subject to municipal taxes. But Holden says annexation would also mean the city is responsible for providing more services, which at this point is not practical, he says. “We have a top-rated fire district,” Holden says. “For us to provide free fire protection to Gardere would jeopardize that rating and would be cost prohibitive.” Holden says he will oppose any such effort, at least for now, adding that Marcelle “has to take a broader perspective of what is going on.” —Stephanie Riegel

But if they use blatantly discredited arguments then the St George side can probably push for a summary judgment in their favor plus sanctions on the BR lawyers like Mary Olive Pierson who pushed discredited arguments as a suit.

Hope the judge rules in their favor and forces the BR penalties to equal roughly the remaining amount of Parish unfunded liabilities.

A true middle finger!

Pretty sure our country was founded on this principle.

It worked out pretty well.

Yup. And they have now pivoted use the fact that the area is grossly underserved from a school standpoint as an argument against it all.

St. George will not have enough money for their local services based on current tax rates, yet the City of BR claims they may be financially destroyed if it happens. They are basically arguing against very simple math. The St. George side has been very consistent in their argument.

More like swapping out government. The deconsolidation of the City-Parish government is next.

This argument will be hard to prove for BR. $46M that St. George will retain from the 2% sales tax only amounts to 5% of the total $960M City-Parish budget.

Unlikely.
Should it be done? Probably. Focus on city governments and use the parish to manage infrastructure, drainage, etc.
They could be much more efficient that way.

But why would government officials willingly give up power?
The only way in our lifetime that we've seen dramatic change is this StG incorporation. And the primary power brokers in the parish and state have tried to fight it at every turn.

Your opinion only. Lafayette has already deconsolidated. EBR's consolidation is bastardized and no longer sustainable. Even the local NAACP is crying for this to happen. It won't be long once SG in incorporated.

If the merger gets tossed, it is because some combination of Zachary, Central, St George, and Baker decided that they don’t want Baton Rouge over the whole kitty.

Baker wouldn’t normally throw in on this but anything convincing them that they get more money than the status quo likely gets their attention.

Isn't Lafayette currently in the process of potentially deconsolidating?

That would be a good case study. I understand it's a smaller scale, but not so small that it's irrelevant.

People like John Engquist,

I do find it funny that John Enquist is against St. George. If you look at his developments you'll find them in Zachary, Central, and Ascension parishes. He also has a development coming up in the St. George boundary near Woman's hospital. Perhaps less virtue signaling and more development inside the city is needed from this high profile developer.

Sort of reminds me of wealthy folks in the outlying parishes who enjoy New Orleans for Mardi Gras and other social events (Saints games, etc.) but don't seem to grasp that their parades tear up infrastructure, drain police, etc. resources, which requires funding. Maybe the St. Georgians should be required to pay entry fees to EBR Parish to attend LSU games.

I think they've been pretty clear that they too don't like the status quo, but don't believe that splitting up the city is the answer. The message is that we'd make more progress overall if we work together.

"Work together" just means "white people send us more money while we call you racist."

Besides, they didn't even want to speak to StG crowd until they were facing defeat.

It will be an absolutely GLORIOUS morning Sunday to wake up, hung over after an LSU victory, and look at the melt on the thunder counts and Gravy's facebooks.
