I know. I was just trying out the other side of the argument. Did I do it right?

The “drivers are so terrible at driving, that any wreck is the cyclists fault” is one of the most egregious examples of blame shifting I’ve ever seen.

Sure. My main point is that drivers of vehicles take everything for granted. They're in charge mentality. It's been ingrained in motorists minds to only think of other 4 wheel vehicles.

When at the end of the day, you're merely passenger in a 2 ton piece of metal that is defying the physics of how fast a human body should move to begin with.

Agreed. But I just don't think it's wise to get in front of them in a place an on a vehicle that creates challenges for their limited abilities and offers absolutely no protection from the smallest of crashes.

I gave up riding motorcycles on the street years ago because of the things you point out above. The outcome of motorcycle wreck is pretty obvious. It's a given fact that too many drivers "don't see" motorcycles.

But at least on a motorcycle, I'm not traveling at one-third their speed and creating a potentially deadly scenario for every single vehicle traveling my way. On a motorcycle, if I'm traveling in the range of the speed limit, most vehicles will not have to pass me. On a bicycle, virtually every one of them will have to see me, and operate their vehicle safely and responsibly to protect MY life. If a single one of them doesn't, then you know the rest.

This is a beautiful country. More people need to spend more time outdoors. America is being ruined by fatass, video game playing assholes who complain every time someone gets in their way.
See a cyclist on the road, so fricking what?, spend a extra few seconds and pass him when possible. What do you asswipes do when you see a little old lady walking in front of you on a sidewalk? Push her down and keep on walking?
I never understood the vitriol to cyclists in the South (mainly). Are you jealous of them that they have the energy to go out and exercise, while you're riding in your big SUV eating cheeseburgers?
This country doesn't deserve the shitheads that can't take time to slow down and have patience.
Seriously, what hurry could a 21 year old have been in on a Saturday morning?

And here lies the problem. We have become acclimated to catering to the incompetent.

People are arguing in this thread that we should all get out of the way and let drivers too stupid or irresponsible not to hit cyclists take over the road. Everyone should bow down to their inability navigate their vehicle safely on the road.

This is how stupidity, incompetence, and irresponsibility triumph over those of us that aren’t. It’s a silly framework.

St George should be in serious discussions to build a high tech hospital and ER for the surrounding area. The chemical plants should be overwhelmingly supportive of such an important issue.

But that won't do anything and that's the point that a lot of us have been trying to make. Humans are humans. If cyclists get on roads with vehicles moving significantly different speeds than they are, they will continue to die.

Every close call I have had on my bike involved someone driving in excess of the speed limit, most of my riding is done in areas with a 25MPH limit, I am routinely passed by people doing twice that. Just driving the speed limit will give me time to move and the driver more time to see me, yes if we collide I will still be the loser, but it would go a long way to avoiding the collision.

quote:

You can't regulate or legislate human beings acting like human beings out of the equation. As long as humans are piloting the bikes and piloting the cars, they will collide, and the cyclists will lose. It doesn't really matter what the law says on the legality of the matter or the penalty for hitting a cyclist is.

People take driving under the influence much more seriously than they did 30 years ago due to the much stiffer penalties that have been enacted in most states, so behavior can be legislated.

This is how self driving automobiles will gain the support from all sides.

Right. If we applied the same logic to drunk drivers:other motorists as defined in this thread... 30 years ago the argument would have been “well sober drivers should expect drunk drivers to be on the road, so they should expect to be in wrecks caused by drunks. It’s really the sober drivers own fault. They should know better”.

No one said he was in a hurry. He was not charged with speeding. Per the State Police, the accident happened because he (Alexander) failed to reduce his speed and move over. He was booked into the West Feliciana Parish Jail for Negligent Homicide, Negligent Injuring, and Limitations on Passing Bicycles.

Can any of you tell me exactly what "Limitations on Passing Bicycles" means?

Oh yes. For sure. There will be a move to require the self driving cars because we (already) have become a society too stupid, too irresponsible, too selfish to drive cars safely. I think that’s pathetic.

so by pointing out the fact that cyclist create unnecessary bottlenecks and create a potential problem every time someone has to pass them, I’m like super anti-cyclist?

Point to me where I said frick buddy. Or he shouldn’t have been there. Or telling cyclist that they’re breaking some law or something.

All I’ve done is point out the fricking obvious. The exact same thing YOU would argue about slow drivers in the left lane of the interstate.

They create a habitat that is ripe for issues to arise.
