Victims car. A 1 year old baby survived somehow.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a one-year-old child survived Thursday morning's crash on Interstate 20 that left two people dead.

The collision happened around 1:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of highway.

Troopers say a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Charise Antonia Payano collided with another car along the roadway. Two people in the car where the baby was a passenger were killed, but the child did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Absolutely agree with this. If it's just a DUI and not a crash, then 1 year in jail and a stiff fine.

If injuries, then attempted murder, if a death occurs, then a murder charge.

Penalties should be much harsher for drunk drivers. Minimum loss of license for a year. Minimum amount of 2 days in jail. Repeat offenders should lose their license permanently, as well as permanent seizure of their vehicle

Edit: frick you drunk drivers, someone in my family was killed by one of you. Drink at home or stop being cheap and get a fricking Uber

Agree with all of this

If I stood in the middle of a road and fired a rifle blindly down the road, even if I didn't hit anyone, I would probably charged with a felony

That's exactly what drunk driving is. Your car is the bullet. Better hope it doesnt hit anything

The alcohol lobby is a major obstacle

But you are right.

Idiots drive drunk because they think they are fine, can drive OK drunk and wont get caught. And if they do get caught it wont be a big deal.

Penalties need to be tougher so people dont even think about doing it.

My opinion as a guy who likes to buzz drive on occasion.

1st offense DWI under .16 is a slap on wrist. over .16 is felony.

2nd offense DWI under .16 is a felony with 6months work release(halfway house). over .16 is felony 6 months prison. mandatory.

That would curb not only repeat offenses but motherfrickers who think it's okay to drive shitcanned drunk.

I have no issue with folks drinking, just not drinking and driving.

Also, the same for distracted driving issues like cell phones.

Making a first offense a felony won't deter the people who get really fricked up and drive. Accidents like this aren't cause by people at .08 or little above.

If you are over .15 penalties should be higher.

I can get on board with that

Drunk driving apologists/defenders will still attack you for your reasonable, rational idea though

What if you seize their vehicle? Would that deter them?

That's a good question. Forfeiture of personal property in the commission of a crime. Hell, there's a monthly thread on here about how some PD seizes some kids parents' house because he was caught selling an ounce of pot from it.
