Not saying driving while drunk isn't terrible, but driving while incompetent or distracted has gotten extremely bad as well

This person wasn't drunk

Monday afternoon on the way home from work I was passed (65 MPH zone) by a guy in a Chrysler minivan of all things. He was weaving in and out of both lanes, came close to sideswiping several cars and almost hit a bridge rail head on. He'd sped up to about 80 mhp next he'd get down to like 50 before punching it again. Not only could he not hold a lane, he couldn't even keep it on the asphalt as he competly ran off onto the shoulder numerious times. Had this not been a major highway with full size shoulders, he'd have wrecked. And even then he came within inches of sideswipping thr guardrail over and over. This went on for close to 15-20 miles.

I didn't hesitate nor regret for one second calling 911 on his arse. When we got into the next town the sight of seeing him pulled over by a state trooper was very satisfying.

I only hope they throw the book at his arse because it turned out that where they pulled him over at was right where my wife and 8 yr old daughter had passed by only 15 minutes earlier on the way to softball practice.

That's not how any of this works

Now, if you make driving while intoxicated a felony, then I believe by definition, killing someone would be automatic first degree murder.

As it stands now, I don't believe an individual can be charged with murder or attempted murder for injuring or killing someone while driving drunk.

Eye for an eye. We should execute 2 people she knows.

Penalties need to be tougher so people dont even think about doing it.

Penalties for killing someone is pretty harsh, yet people are still killed everyday. That's some horrid logic you're using.

That's a good question. Forfeiture of personal property in the commission of a crime. Hell, there's a monthly thread on here about how some PD seizes some kids parents' house because he was caught selling an ounce of pot from it.

That's not the same thing. If I go pop off a few shots from my handgun in front of my house, you bet they're taking my gun. You drive drunk, you lose your car. Both have the capacity to kill someone when used incorrectly

Uber has changed the game. Now you literally have no excuse. You can leave your car and call an uber home for less than $20 most of the time. If you dont have $20 for an uber you shouldn't be out drinking anyway.

It's like someone already said, what would be the penalty if you went and stood in the road and started firing a rifle up and down the road and ended up hitting and killing someone? Drunk driving is no different other than you're using a 4,000 lb. car instead of a small chunk of lead.

There ain't a better feeling in the world than popping the top off a couple coldies, radio up, and windows down on a long interstate road trip.

I don't get the being out all night then getting behind the wheel drunk tho. It's inexcusable.

It absolutely is, but don't let that get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Absolutely agree with this. If it's just a DUI and not a crash, then 1 year in jail and a stiff fine.

I think that's a little harsh. For almost all people .08 (two or three beers) isn't even buzzed, yet they still get the DUI now because if they don't blow they get automatic suspension of license and arrested. Which really sounds like entrapment but I'm not an attorney so idk. Should be .1 or .15 and you get a DUI. There's a huge difference between drunk driving and having a couple beers and getting behind the wheel. Thank you MADD.

How is it different? One you're firing bullets randomly down a road and the other your randomly hurtling a car down the road.

BTW: Nice try on trying to use the lame "emotional argument" straw man there.

I get your angst.

Just a few questions:

1. Do you consume alcohol?
2. If yes to #1, have you ever been tipsy?
3. Have you always (100%) called taxi/uber when #2?
4. Do you have friends who have ever driven tipsy?
5. If yes to #5, have you disowned them?
6. Do you make a distinction between tipsy/buzzed and "drunk"?

Every single person I know has at some time gotten behind the wheel while tipsy.....

Now, on driving drunk/blitzed, bad juju.
