I screwed up buying a nice vehicle. I always used to drive old, beat up craigslist deals that would crap out after a year or two.

I had a 1988 corolla that I bought for 1200. It ran fine for two years then when the tranny went out I sold it for 600. I spent 600 dollars to drive about 100k miles, also the insurance was dirt cheap.

I did the same type of thing with a few other vehicles, an 1999 corolla, a 2003 camry, and a 2001 accord. When the camry crapped out in 2016 I decided it was time to get a new vehicle like an adult. I ended up with a 250 dollar note.

250*12=3000. I'm spending 3000 dollars a year to drive this car. Over the 5 year course of the note that is around 10,000 more than if I was still driving the craigslist specials. Normally my insurance was around 50 bucks for liability for the old cars, it's about double now. That's another 3000 over 5 years. I also put a 12k down payment.

It's nice to have a reliable vehicle but I'm single and breaking down doesn't really bother me that much. I have a second vehicle that I use for hunting trips and such.

TLDR: I should have kept driving shitty vehicles.

You should increase your limits to adult amounts.

I agree and it's what I did for many years but driving a new car sure is nice the past few years.

The worst was the 70s and 80s because of the unreliability, every trip was a white knuckler.

I've driven just over 32k in 8 months. averages to 48k a year, so 96k in 2 years.

i did this too for a long time but finally broke down and bought a nicer car for the bluetooth re: music and podcasts. Aux cords weren't cutting it for me anymore.

I'm of a similar mindset.

Have an old reliable car with no car payments and only liability vs. a new car with perhaps a $600 car payment and full coverage insurance.

The moment you drive the car off the lot you are losing money. Three years later still paying a note on the car and possibly interest as well and the car is depreciating fast.

Does the new car give you something different you really like vs an old reliable car?

Personally, I'd rather chose the old reliable car and spend the $600 car payment money and put it towards a larger and nicer home.

I can't hate on people who go the thrifty route with cars (or anything for that matter). Different strokes for different folks.

I get in to cars. I enjoy learning about them and driving them for performance. It's an expensive game but it's something I enjoy.

Not everyone is in to such things.
