Hell, I still drive a 2004 truck that I bought new. 14+ years, total cost for repairs besides tires and oil changes, about $1250. Before spending that money, I did go look at new trucks. There was no way in hell I was going to drop $50K+ for a dam truck. My truck has 200K and runs/drives great. Got to love a diesel.

I did have to replace the water pump Monday, but that was replaced back in 2013 and it had a life time warranty.

Spending money because of what people you don't even know may think is a major reason a lot of people never accumulate any wealth over the course of their lives leaving them with no retirement options other than working until they die.

This is true. We're not having kids so I can spend money on cars and nice place, and still put money away for retirement. I'm not quite 30 yet so I still have time to adjust if I decide I don't want to spend that much money on cars.

Well, I am retired and yes, I can buy any truck I want with cash, but these days, I only drive about 4K miles a year.

I was putting about 800 miles a week on it. Maybe I only put 83200 miles on it but that's close enough to 100k.

Some people don’t care about vehicles as long as their reliable. I mean shite, we have guys at work making over 300k that ride around in lower model accords. People place value in different aspects in life. 99% of the time people spend way over what they should on vehicles just to look like they have money.

LOL. I drive a 1998 Chevy K1500. It has 240,000 miles on it. Other the brakes, plugs and wires, batteries and tires the only things I have had to replace was a waterpump (and hoses at that time) and a fuel pump.

But before you get too uppity the thing I sit on the most is a JD 6175M. Less than a year old and I have 2750 hours on it.

Damn a truck I cant make money from.

I have to have a reliable car. Can't get on board with driving a beater. I prefer to pay for the convenience I suppose.

When my lease is up I'm getting a nice, used car to get from home to work, but I'm not getting a piece of crap just to save a few bucks.

Drove a 1997 Toyota 4Runner I bought for $3,200 on Craigslist. Insurance was $58 a month and taxes and registion were $50 a year.

Did nothing except oil changes for 3 years before some a-hole totaled it...and insurance gave me $4,800 for it

So I just bought another 1997 4Runner with less miles on it off Craigslist, but had to pay $5k for this one (although has lift, new radio, new timing chain and new clutch, and only one owner with docs to prove)

One other benefit of older cars is you have a ton of data on reliability, common issues, and what to avoid. Not a lot of surprises

This. ill be the first to admit that considering the price of a new truck, I don't have that kind of money to throw away. Id rather pay that towards an investment ill get a return on

On the one hand, I absolutely agree with you. I have a 2010 car that is now 8 years old, paid for, and cheap to gas up and insure. But I live in DC and drive very little. So until I move I will never spend $25-$30k on a new car, or even $15k on a used vehicle, because it just doesn't make sense for me.

However, I like to watch IIHS crash test videos. Newer cars are MUCH safer than older ones. Even 8 year old ones like my Mazda. How much is your life worth? The possibility of sustaining serious injuries if you're in an accident?

Personally, I'd rather chose the old reliable car and spend the $600 car payment money and put it towards a larger and nicer home.

a lot of people say this, but i don't see too many nice homes with 94 civic's in the garage

I drive an 06 4Runner with a few dents. Park that sucker in a $600k home's garage.

Truth be told, I do get looks from neighbors at times and my wife's SUV was around $70k

I just have zero motivation to get a new vehicle when my current one runs great. knock on wood.
