Not worth the effort for anything under a couple hours. It’s like 5 miles per hour of charging.

You need to focus on finding level 2 overnight charging and level 3 on the road.

So I see the supercharger locations. We were hoping to plan a "drive, eat, drive, hotel" type trip and arrive in two days. With a roughly 400 mile range it seems that may work.

I just don't have experience and it seems like this is probably a 3 or even 4 day trip if we go EV.

What if you'f prefer to drive over 300 miles( or whatever the current range is) in one day?
This is a massive problem for EVs.
You can gas up and go with fossil fuel.
EV is extremely inefficient for distance travel until they have MUCH faster charging capability or MUCH farther range.

I used a planner a buddy of mine uses. From Nola to Boston is roughly 29.5 hours with an ev. ICE is 24.5 so 5 hours added for charging.

Never had to make the drive in an EV, but the drive can be done in two days typically. We stopped in Abington, VA the first night and the made it from there to Boston on the second day.

Honestly, fly if you can.

I don't believe all of us hate EVs. Rather we hate the thought that the force of government should be used to make everyone drive an EV, regardless of how it would impact our lives. We also hate our politicians self righteously telling us that if we don't like gas prices, we should just go out and buy a $50k+ new electric vehicle, because its just that simple.

Charging in most vehicles gets you 80% in less than 1 hour now, right?
If you're in a Tesla on the supercharging network, 10-1515 minutes will get you to 80% or enough to get you to the next supercharging station.

Possibly longer if you're in the lowest level standard range Model 3, but anything above, and you're good to go with stops not really going over 15 minutes 99% of the time.

A trip to Houston can take an extra 3 hours bc of taking 1-2 stops to charge a Tesla
Why would it take you 3 hours to stop 1-2 times in a Tesla?

Are you charing up to 1000%?

For your sanity, try to hit NYC and CT on a Sunday morning. Or plan on lots of sitting in traffic, and whatever that does to your vehicles projected range per recharge

That picture is funny but actually brings up an interesting idea. Say you build an electric truck, what size generator would you need in the bed to charge it while driving? If you could do it with say a small portable size and only burn a few gallons of gas it would be quite an efficient transfer of energy

Woah!

Now that thing is awesome.

It gives charging times, locations and estimated % of charge (like 15% ---> 88% after 41 minutes).

It's a 32 hour trip.

You can't use the Tesla supercharging network in the VW ID.4.

If long trips are the norm for you, it's good you're doing this test run, but it would seem unlikely at this point that any non-Tesla would be a good fit for your needs due to charge destinations/speeds, at least as I understand it.

I'd defer to others who may know more specifics as I got nothing 100% concrete, but when you're at the hotel, I'm not sure how you're going to be able to get a charge fast enough to get you back to 400 miles.

I don't know about 3-4 days, but if in a non-Tesla EV, it'll probably be more of an inconvenience than it's worth.

Yep.

It has virtually everything you possibly need to meticulously plan a trip. You can add your charge % when you leave, put a % you never want to get below, and have a desired % when reaching your final destination. I think it's the best site out there.

I have a Tesla, and the navigation screen on the car does just fine, but I still use this site sometimes to plan trips as it just is a really cool site.

If you were to purchase and/or take a lot of trips and you like that site, it also has an app.

Not frequent trips.

This is driving a kid to college and leaving him with the car.

It's just planning rn. Heck, might buy the vehicle up there.

The betterplanner site had info for the VW (as well as TONS of other EVs) so that's a huge help.

Why is it strange? EV's are not practical. Where does the additional electricity needed for these vehicles going to come from? Convenient charging stations? Charging time?

Not a bad idea. Would he be driving it back "home" or to wherever you are in NOLA during school breaks and between semesters?

I imagine using that site, while it certainly is awesome, may show that it could be quite the inconvenience if there is to be a decent amount of long distance driving for him.
