Not a bad idea. Would he be driving it back "home" or to wherever you are in NOLA during school breaks and between semesters?
Probably just up in fall and back for the summer. Any in between trips would be flights.
Or just buy it there and leave it there. Not sure if he could leave it on campus all summer though.

Why is it strange? EV's are not practical.
quote:Plug it into the wall at home, save a good bit of money not paying gas.
Where does the additional electricity needed for these vehicles going to come from?
quote:Don't really need 99% of the time for daily commuters, which again, are the vast majority of folks.
Convenient charging stations?
quote:Non Tesla is an issue right now. If in a Tesla, it's much less time than most people realize. If you're going on a family trip with a couple of kids on, say, a 10 hour drive where you're gonna make bathroom stops, stops to eat, etc...it may add 30-45 minutes to that trip at the most since you can double up efforts and charge while you eat, bathroom stops while you charge, and so on.
Charging time?

I can't speak for anyone else but me but I don't hate them nor do I have a problem with people who own/like them. I'm just not interested in owning one myself

quote:If that's just really what he wants and is ok with the added times a couple of years, definitely go for it.
Probably just up in fall and back for the summer.
But at the risk of sounding like a total Tesla shill lol, it would likely be much more convenient to snag a SR Model 3 around the same price range as the ID.4.
You can see that website I linked to do a similar trip planner with a SR Tesla to see the difference. Again, maybe that's not even an option at all that he/you simply don't want, but just throwing out ideas.

Thanks for the suggestions.
At this rate, the wife will probably demand the Tesla and give him her fossil fueled SUV. Then gotta fight him on the SUVs. First world problems, it the US were actually first world.

I've done D.C. to Austin and back. The amount of time charging is exaggerated by this board. It is easy to plan your stops. We used the map in a Tesla X/S and charged at places we either need a stretch break, food, tourist stop, or it was included with the hotel. It is all right in front of you. Use your man card and plan a road trip

I know the feeling. I bought mine, had it for 1 year then the pandemic hit, and I've been work from home ever since, so now the wife drives mine 95% of the time.

Adulting is fun!

I'm making a 24 hour trip starting on Saturday but I don't have to worry about this gay shite because my vehicle uses gas.
Son of a friend was in town for a wedding. He is a wildlands firefighter. Left Tuscaloosa on Sunday with his cousin heading to the Hermits Peak fire in New Mexico. Took them 20.5 hours driving straight.
Couldnt do that in an EV.
And that fire is HUGE. 299,000 acres burned so far. Largest in New Mexico history.

A trip to Houston can take an extra 3 hours bc of taking 1-2 stops to charge a Tesla so just extrapolate that...
the irony of people bitching about gas prices & then say shite like this.
Also are you talking about a trip from BR-Houston? surely there's some sarcasm here but who wouldn't make sure their car isn't fully charged before a 4 hr drive?

So I see the supercharger locations. We were hoping to plan a "drive, eat, drive, hotel" type trip and arrive in two days. With a roughly 400 mile range it seems that may work.
I just don't have experience and it seems like this is probably a 3 or even 4 day trip if we go EV.

Fly, there’s planes that go there like EVERY DAY.
They have these things called “rental cars” once you get there.
Get one.
If you simply must display your predilection, possibly you can put a rainbow sticker on your rental car once you get there.

Just put solar panels and a windmill on the roof. Free green energy - no need to stop.

Think this through. California has rolling brown outs every year and Texas was a disaster after a winter storm. The US doesn't have the infrastructure to support EV's. The earth was supposed to have run out of oil by 2000. That was the lie they told us in the 70's.
