He didn’t have insurance on the totaled car that was still registered. The fact that he had insurance on some other car is 100% irrelevant.

This happened to me because the dealer forgot to turn in the license plate on the truck I traded in. I found out when I went to renew my drivers license too. They didn't charge me anything

I thought that was just common sense. The state doesn’t care that it was sitting in a backyard, if it still has a license plate it has to be covered or the fines will start. You aren’t winning this battle, sucks you didn’t know but that’s not going to change anything.

At least you got six months. I had to pay $656 for a lapse of 4 days on a car that did have insurance. Toy will pay or not get your license renewed welcome to Louisiana.

Finally sold totaled car in July after near 6 months of waiting on the settlement.
If so, your insurance company should have notified the state (through the online system). At that point your vehicle is a salvage vehicle and needs to be inspected by the state and get a reconstructed title before it is allowed to be driven (or registered).
You may have some luck if you push it as the state was notified that it was totaled meaning it was not allowed to drive on the roadway and the registration effectively canceled. Therefore they know (or should have known) that the vehicle was inoperable. You won’t be able to have that convo with just some frontline DMV worker though. You are going to need to get to at least their managers to discuss. And it still may not work. LINK

Generally if a car is registered at the DMV it must be insured. You can always send in a notice of non-use if it's in the shop, but generally if it's just sitting in your yard not being driven it's probably easier to just unregister it.

OMV said they mailed letters. Never got them. They went to my old address that was on my license
How are they supposed to know you're at a new address if you don't update it?

If my license had not expired in December I’d still never know that I did anything “wrong”.
Your license has been expired sinxe December and youre just trying to renew it now?
At least you know these things now going forward. But all of this sounds like your fault man. We can bitch about the DMV all we want but I mean what do you expect them to do? They can't know a vehicle isn't being used unless you tell them. If it's still registered theyre going to assume it's being used which imo is a fair assumption. Fines and flagging licenses for, what appears to them, using an uninsured vehicle is fair to me to. They don't know you're at a new address to receive mail unless you tell them.
So I hate to say it boss but that's on you. It sucks, but just learn from it and don't repeat the same mistake if it happens again.

Isnt that recent bill supposed to address this?
The problem is that most people dont have $656 just laying around. This is the reason why so many drivers in Louisiana are undocumented on the road.
It's a total grift. Starts out low then escalates to that amount.

I’m sooooo glad my learning experience with insurance/plate turn-in was back about 2001. It was just a couple hundred dollars or less. Still enough for a tightwad like me to pay attention rather than cash in the future.

I made a dumb mistake like that but it wasn't $700. My Father in law was selling my vehicle and made it seem like a deal was done. Well it wasn't and so I basically said sounds like the car will now sell for X amount less when I got that letter. I was stationed in another state which is why he said he would take care of it.
I won't blame anyone for that BUT there's a lot of motherfrickers driving around uninsured and I bet they aren't getting these letters

I didn't read all that shite, but you could call your state rep and they can make it go away. At least when JBEs director of motor vehicles was there you could. Not sure who Constitution Jeff has in there now.

Probably because they just don’t have plates. Or drivers’ licenses. Or both.
(Seriously)

This will get you labeled as an ultra-right-MAGA-super-extremeist ++ so just go ahead and ANFO for us all.

Hey dumbass, stop trying to blame everyone else. It’s your fault. Pay up and move on

I doubt that. We went from middle of the road on the left, especially compared to other Democratic Governors and now the Northern Republican Baptist’s of Louisiana are running the show.

It’s a scam. The girl in charge never gives any consolation. You can’t beat city hall.

What you are being assessed is commonly referred to as a “Dumbass Fee”.
I was a dumbass and forgot to renew my wife’s registration a couple years ago. She got ticketed in an adjacent county and it cost us $125 plus a $20 late fee.
That, IMO, is a valid dumbass fee for this kind of administrative oversight…$700 though?
