I am not familiar with Dr. Cave but I do have a 2 1/2 year old son with verbal apraxia and some developmental delays though he is not autistic. Through trial and error we have found a wonderful speech therapist who comes to our house twice a week and she has made great strides with him. In home therapy has worked much better than bringing him to a clinical setting, which we initially did through Woman's Hospital. He also attends group therapy at The Emerge Center and we are very pleased with the facility. While his therapy group does not contain autistic children, I am exposed to several parents/children who attend Emerge and are autistic. What they do at Emerge with these children is truly amazing. We also have an excellent pediatric neurologist who guides us (Dr Charlotte Hollman). I encourage you to look into The Emerge Center and what they have to offer for your child.

Another excellent facility is St. Lillian's Academy.

I sympathize with you and I know first hand how frustrating this situation can be and how costly. We have excellent insurance but they do not cover ANYTHING when it comes to our child and therapy.

My thoughts were that they were just some vitamins and they were already paid for, so why not take them. It really was a waste of money

This thread has been extremely helpful. Thank you to everyone that has contributed, it really means a lot. Hopefully I get to one day tell people that my son's drastic improvement was due to a site called TigerDroppings.

As a married man with no children, I just wanna say that this thread is full of amazing information that has the potential to save marriages, families and futures, to say nothing of the thousands of dollars in medical savings to be gleaned from it.

And it doesn't cost a damn dime.

'Merica! frick Yeah!

Your stories have made my wife and I smile and feel for many of you. Glad to hear about the perseverance and love that's obvious in many of these posts!

This is non-negotiable for me. He is doing both, as well as OT, currently and will continue on that path. We are looking to cross every bridge we can though.

I don't know what to say other than do what you have to. This trip may be for treatment of your wife and not your son. My sister came to grips that there was no major break through cure after her experience with this doctor. She was heart broken and quite a bit poorer. I think the initial visit was $350-$500 or something ridiculous like that. I asked my sister if she was "So committed to helping these kids, why does she need to charge that kind of $"

Stay the course and make sure you and the wife are united.

Mr. Wayne,

I am a father of a 13 year old son with autism. 11 years ago, we were in your situation. We looked into every possibility including the physician you mention. We followed her program diligently for several months to no avail. Our continued research led us to ABA therapy. I deal with parents all over that are in your situation. I will never tell someone not to look into any possibility as every situation is different.

However, ABA therapy when properly adhered to by the family works. My wife and I founded a school here in Shreveport that offers ABA and we have seen great results not only for my son, but dozens of others.

I could talk about this all night as this is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. As I said before, I help parents all over by sharing our experience and helping them with options and counseling. I am not a clinician, just a father that has decided to help any one in this situation in any way I can.

If I can help you or answer any question about these or other autism topics, feel free to email me at jmanning@pathrehab.com

Dr Cave is a quack. She's married to an ambulance chaser plaintiffs lawyer. They are both out to make a quick buck. None of her methods are proven to work.

Contact Dynamic Therapy Specialists Here in Baton Rouge. Dr. Roy specializes in speech issues in autistic children. LINK

They also have a Facebook page with raving reviews. Worth a try before going to some quack.

Good work as always on these threads.

Thank you.

This sort of thing is that little pet peeve of mine. I see people get taken advantage all the time. It is really sad.

They have no idea they are being taken advantage of till too late.

I hate all these shamsters. Alternative medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractors, and acupuncturists should all just be recognized for the total waste of money they are. Unless you like paying ridiculous amounts of money for what is in reality placebo, I recommend you stay away.

And worse than these are the people who take advantage of cancer patients or other terminal patients. It is just criminal.

Has anyone here that has a child with Autism been told not to give the child acetaminophen aka Tylenol aka paracetamol in other countries?

After seeing a PBS show about agriculture in Cuba, that it is strictly organic for more than 50 years made me curious about incidence of Alzheimer's. My own curiosity brought up the fact that Autism is extremely rare also. Also discovered one U.S. Doctor's thoughts that acetaminophen may be a link. It is commonly recommended and given to young infants, toddlers and children. The drug is called paracetamol in other countries, as well as in Cuba. This doctor found that acetaminophen is only available by prescription in Cuba, so it is not easily obtained and given to infants, toddlers and children. The researcher believes there is a faulty acetaminophen metabolism that may cause/contribute to Autism development.

Just curious. Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks for this post, guys. Though it is old, it is a treasure trove of information about a local quack doctor. Just so everyone knows, her book is being cited by "anti-vaxxers" now. Ugh.

Go see Dr. McGuire at Children's in N.O. She's a neuro that specializes in epilepsy. She's the best, IMO

Do you have an update?

Did you send your child to this doctor or go another route?

I have very little experience with autistic children other than having a neighbor who had a child that had autism. The little boy who would play with my dog for hours at a time. They have since moved but come by to visit occasionally.

Bump.

I have a child on the ASD spectrum and have heard mixed results about Dr. Cave. Actually sitting in the waiting room as we speak.

Will give you my honest feedback.

I agree but if your child has autism, there's a probability (depending on the child) he or she may not get all the nutrients that are needed from their duet since their diet can be very limited.

A multi disciplinary approach with a physician, ot/pt, slp, and ABA works best.

Was that Dr. Elliot or Blancher?

Their % of diagnosing children with autism is much lower compared to other providers. I say this as an OT student at Lsuhsc Shreveport

My little brother is not autistic, but does have speech appraxia. He did not talk until he was 8-9, struggled for many years before and after with self esteem and learning issues. My mom and dad really fought for his education, pushed doctors and therapists and ultimately found good ones for him.

He is now fine, is a functioning, working member of society and has very few if any real world limitations. Really, any limitations are probably self esteem issues that still linger.

Point is, don't give up on little Wayne, don't be afraid to question doctors and educators, insist that you, not them, know what is best for your kid (within reason obviously).

Didnt read the thread but that woman has been sued a lot, she operates in a very gray area with regard to hard science and essentially tells the parent what they want to hear, be careful.
