This has been a pretty common thought in the field. There are 4 known endemic human coronaviruses (part of the common cold family), immunity to coronaviruses doesn't appear to last, vaccines for other coronaviruses have proven difficult to develop. I know y'all hate models, but the best estimates are that with a vaccine that imparts lifelong immunity it would take between 3 - 5 yrs for the combo of herd immunity and vaccine to eliminate the virus. Outside of that, there is no good reason that it won't maintain a circulation in the human population.

Makes total sense. We deal seasonally with three other coronaviruses that give us common colds. I’m sure that when they entered the human population, they caused all kinds of havoc before they mutated to the nonlethal forms we experience now.
It’s logical to think the SARS CoV-2 will do the same after a few years. It’ll probably kill a lot of people between now and then, however. The others probably did, too.
