USCG broadcast just stated that they are seeing significant flooding. Their cooling units could be going down; which ultimately leads to a big boom. It's the plant located between I-10 and HWY 90.

tgrbatn08, heard anything?

I have no idea how an ammonia plant works but was there no way for them to be offline or shut down so that losing the cooling units wouldn't affect them?

I'm pretty sure they would be shut down by now

Found a new alert from the plant itself:

Arkema Statement: Status of Plant in Crosby, Texas

3:30 pm est., August 29, 2017

The situation at the Crosby site has become serious. In order to ensure the safety of our ride-out team, all personnel have been evacuated from the site at this time.

We are working with the Department of Homeland Security and the State of Texas to set up a command post in a suitable location near our site. Refrigeration on some of our back-up product storage containers has been compromised due to extremely high water, which is unprecedented in the Crosby area. We are monitoring the temperature of each refrigeration container remotely. At this time, while we do not believe there is any imminent danger, the potential for a chemical reaction leading to a fire and/or explosion within the site confines is real.

My coast guard buddy told me earlier today "just heard an advisory over the radio for all aircraft to steer clear of lake houston due to imminent explosion"

Guess we will see. I've heard it takes anywhere from 8 to 20 hours for it to react, expand, or whatever the hell it does.

And once it does you better hold onto your britches from a distance.

Can anyone tell me if this plant will affect anyone one hunkered down in Huffman or the west side of the Lake in those neighborhoods?

It will expand. If it starts warming then gasses will be released until the container goes boom if it isn't cooled.

But anyone know the radius of this blast and subsequent dangerous releases?

Anyone run the math on potential strength of explosion?

Looks like Arkema should have spent more on preparation and less on yachts...

Yes please. Lots of people have folks in that area hunkered down riding it out. But if 7 miles from that plant ain't enough....

Cajun Navy Dispatch is telling boats to stay at least 5 miles away.

They require refrigerant compressors to keep the NH3 from expanding and rupturing the tanks. All storage tanks should have pressure relief devices that will vent to a flair. I assume that a total loss of refridgeration would cause a rapid expansion of NH3 so that the safety devices can not contain it. Therefore, rupturing the tanks. This could mean a release of NH3 in epic proportions to atmosphere. Rain would help to knock it down. It is very dangerous to breathe as you all know.
