re: Door to door soliciting. Is this effective in 2026?

I can’t answer your question. All I know is nothing enrages me more than getting a knock on the door and it’s a door to door salesman.

I assume they get nearly all their sales from very non-confrontational people who have a hard time saying no. I imagine if you knock on enough doors you will find those people.
We get a lot of pest control salesman around here. The last one I politely declined and said i don’t have time to talk. Of course he kept right on with his pitch so I just closed the door in his face. We could hear him outside carrying on with his sales pitch, just talking to the door LOL

I just got a great deal from a guy selling a side of beef from his van.

I am not too nice to these people.
The scamming roofers are the worst where I live after every storm that MIGHT have had hail. I think we get 3-4 a week.
I live in a community, that isn't gated, but "feels" gated and has a big "NO SOLICITATING" sign at the entrance.
I have some ornery retired neighbors that call the cops on solicitors and it cracks me up.

Even if it is, just don’t answer the door.
Never understood why it bothers people so much.
They're on private property ringing the doorbell making the dogs go nuts. Sometimes while we're sitting down for early dinner. It's fricking annoying.
And 95% of them are full of shite scam artists.

This is the correct answer even if they know someone is home.

just don’t answer the door.
But aggressive continuous knocking is annoying af. Or continuing to talk because I am outdoors already after I tell you I am not interested.
Where can I get this home has a vicious Karen sign?

When they walk up and I'm doing yard work and I stop them before they can talk and say "Thank you but not interested" and they don't stop trying to talk to me and walking closer.
That brings out the angry bear in me.

This old widow that lived across the street from us had a loud recording of a German shepherd barking and growling. She would hide behind the door and scratch and tap on the door like it was trying to get out.
I don’t know if it fooled anyone, but if it gave her peace of mind, then I guess it was okay.

Couple of teenagers with a power washer knocked on the door a few weeks ago, were washing windows. I applauded them for being ambitious but if you don’t have liability insurance, you aren’t doing any work for me.

I don't know if it's effective or not, but since it's not every other day I don't get upset about it.
Part of where society is heading that does bother me is the loss of friendliness / neighborliness. It's one of the reasons St. Louis is such a hidden gem. Most people I run into are still friendly and will strike up a conversation and be polite while doing so.
Life's too short to rage at someone trying to make a living or with a service I might actually use.

Definitely a dying breed.
Had a pest control crew stop by last week pitching their company. Never heard of them. As someone else said, they were in the area already.
I’m in sales and do cold calling to businesses, so I don’t have a problem with people hustling and drumming up business. I can respect that. Just be a legit outfit and leave if I say I’m not interested.

And don't lie and tell me my neighbors use you when I already know they don't. My neighborhood shares contractors, lawn guys, and the like.

Rev came door to door to my neighborhood last week after burying cable on my street a few months ago. Trying to sign people up. He told me I’m signing up all of your neighbors. AT&T did the same thing last year.

I have a buddy who works for Edward Jones and I think they still require their new guys to knock on a certain amount of doors when they first start. I know he had to do it when he first started. I guess it's sort of a weeding out process they go through to see how seriously they want the job since it was one of the first things they told him he would have to do following all of their training in St. Louis.

You are their target market; women at home while the man is at work or out.
The alarm and pest control companies rely on females. As soon as I tell any of them that a woman doesn't live at my house, they know the game is up. It's extremely effective.
In my hood, overrun with Asians and people that don't do their own lawns, are targets for Trugreen, but that's about it.

Not at all.
St. Louis is city is pretty much a shithole. The suburbs and next ring out are great places to live.
Of course, expecting people to know this without living here is why it's hidden.

Zactly my thoughts. Try asking them these exact questions. Most don’t giggle.
