Usually they're high schoolers selling discount cards.
I'll buy some if they're Johnnys Pizza or similar.
Never use them since I forgot about their existance.

It's got to be about as effective as Grainger mailing 10,000 page catalogs to every customer. frick all that. Give me a search function instead of a doorstop.

I live in a community, that isn't gated, but "feels" gated and has a big "NO SOLICITATING" sign at the entrance. I have some ornery retired neighbors that call the cops on solicitors and it cracks me up.
This is pretty much my story. Small, U-shaped, easy to walk subdivision. We get roofers, ATT, pest control, etc. who just park in the back—in front of my house—and walk up both sides. The subdivision is largely old cranky retirees and widows. They had the “No soliciting” signs put up at the entrances…solicitors no care.
It does seem they get yelled at a lot, per the neighborhood FB page. One old person sounds the alarm and the rest are loaded for bear when the salesman shows up. Literally “get off my lawn”.
As for me and my house…we just dont answer the door unless we are expecting someone. We are anti-social that way.
Given my sample study, I dont think they are very effective.
ETA: One Sunday years ago, a church youth group tapped on the door and proffered a dozen hot Krispy Kreme as a community outreach thing. Husband was home and answered the door, thank goodness. That was effective in spiking our blood sugar that morning. We did not visit their church, however.

Put up no trespassing and beware of dog signs.
