A former attorney accused of trying to shoot and kill his ex-wife inside an Ohio restaurant full of patrons has been convicted, authorities said.
A Lucas County jury found Matthew Exton, 43, guilty of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault and multiple firearm specifications.
The jury found Exton not guilty on a remaining count of felonious assault.
On April 11, 2025, Exton ordered a drink at the bar inside a restaurant in Toledo. After leaving the restaurant, he saw his ex-wife and her family at another restaurant next door, according to Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia R. Bates.
Exton entered Sabira, ordered a drink at the bar to be sent to their table and spat toward their table as he walked out.
He later returned with a gun and headed directly toward their table, where he tried to shoot his ex-wife. The gun did not go off because the safety was still on.

It's good to see people actually helping instead of taking out their phones to video it.

That’s why I don’t carry a gun with a safety. Damn things get in the way most of the time.
That dude that tackled him is a fricking hero. I can’t believe she just got on her knees and gave up. I’d like to think my arse would have been hauling arse out of there.

Why the hell would he take that to trial? Did the state just make no plea offer?

Why would the state plea that with such a video and witnesses? Seems pretty slam dunk for them

This. A rare find these days to see a group of people do this.

The bigger question is why he didn't try the post partum defense.

Attorney? Evidently it doesn't take much common sense to be a lawyer...

To avoid the time and cost of a trial. They do it all the time with even harder evidence. I'd be shocked if there wasn't an offer and this dumbass just rejected it.

guilty of attempted murder,
I've always hated that term. It's like the victim is punished for staying alive.

Like that was going to stop anyone.

Never carry a pistol with manual safety.

He shouldn't be let off easy just because his gun jammed. He had every intent to execute that women in broad daylight.
He needs to spend the rest of his life in a prison cell. Death penalty should be an option as far as I'm concerned.

He was an attorney and he seems like a real dumb a-hole. Maybe he thought he could beat the attempted murder charge by claiming he was just trying to scare her not kill her? He was also accused of miming pointing a gun at the prosecutor during the trial and was kicked out because he was interrupting during closing arguments.
