I should've invested in them in 2010. 28 bucks then, 160 area today.

I did. Hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2009 and many of the trail towns only had DG to resupply at. When I returned home I continued to use them and started investing in them. Got out a few years back when I mainly moved to mutual funds.

I was overseas, a bunch of friends and myself opened TD Ameritrade acts and this was one we discussed. We put in 1000. It would be worth over 5k today. Nothing life changing, but still.

They do this silly thing that companies like WeWork, Uber and others cannot.

They sell products at a markup over the price they pay and make sure there is still a profit after paying all other expenses.

I was told their goal is to erect one every 6 miles from one to another.

They are the most disgusting stores I've been in. Merchandise, still in delivery boxes or loose, is always clogging the aisles or strewn about the floor.

They are shrewd in that they own no real estate. Walmart is carrying billions in real estate that are closed stores that requires upkeep and property taxes. DG works with local developers and has them buy the land and build the store to their specs and then sign a long term, high dollar lease, (15 years I think). Everyone wins.

I had this same thought around that time. I was traveling a lot in rural MS and was amazing at how many stores were popping up. My first thought was I should buy some shares but my better sense told me it was stupid to buy stock in a company based on how many new stores I saw popping up as I was driving around bumfrick MS.
At the time I kinda self congratulated myself for what I thought was making a rational (non)investment decision.

DG is the location of choice for rural robbers. One near me has been robbed maybe 12 times. The guys come out of the woods behind the store, rob them and then run back into the woods. Cops found a path through the woods to a road maybe 500 yards behind the store. IMO, a long run for maybe $100.00.

I don't shop there because their stores are always a mess.

That's because most all of DG's growth strategy and recent stock uptick is rooted in filling in the gaps of food deserts in either the urban hood and rural BFE areas.

Serving the underserved with a quasi mini convenience store meets grocery meets hardware.

Dollar Tree is mejor for what it overlaps.

Yeah, the one closest to me is also a mess. More often than not there is no cashier because they are out in the store doing something else. But I can pick up a pound of butter or diet coke or a cheap T shirt so I do shop there from time to time. Closest real store is fifteen miles farther out. I live in the country about 18 miles from a city of 100,000 plus and several Walmart Super Centers.

I work with a woman who lives in the sticks.

she stops almost every day at the dollar general to get the things need.

I was a little shocked at first, but now I realize millions of americans do this every day. cheap, easier than walmart. not many choices where she lives. the closest gas station to her a bag of small chips is 1.50

I love Dollar General. My only complaint is that they stock my favorite toothpaste

If ever I’ve not ever heard a legitimate complaint, this is not that time.

I've always wondered who stocks the store. Every time I stop at one there is one middle aged overweight women working the register who looks like she would pass out after moving three boxes of Cheerios.

I’m convinced DG is owned by cartels or something as a money laundering racket there’s no reason some of them actually make a profit.

Drove past a town not long who I used to live near. It always had a shitty gas station with a liquor store, post office, and a parts store for the local farmers. About 100 residents.

It now has a dollar general. Other than a few scattered rural homes, there is no town or group of houses for at least 8 - 9 miles in any direction

It's great if you live in the country but I don't go to it in the city. Other, better options. Still very convenient in small towns for sure. It's a smart business model.
