re: Does your family eat dinner “family style”? Have I been doing it wrong?

Growing up in BR we never did family style. My sister in-law from BR now lives in GA and certain things at her house are family style. For example, at breakfast jelly, condiments, juice, fruit salad, sausage are placed on table to add to your biscuit and eggs. For dinner, bread basket and salad and dressings are on table. Everything else fixed in kitchen.
We stayed at a family owned inn in Bryson City, NC last year and breakfast and dinner was served in the dining room family style every day (think tv show Newhart). Big lazy susan in the middle of the table and you were seated with at least one other family you didn’t know. Tables sat about ten. My children, ages 6, 4, 2 loved it. It made me rethink how we do dinner. The children were more inclined to try stuff.

My in laws do family style. They are very formal and it’s uncomfortable for me personally. My family does buffet style. It’s more relaxed (and practical); in turn, our time together is much more relaxed and enjoyable.

I’m wanting to start serving family style for our nightly meals. I’m sick and tired of fixing dinner, fixing my plate, and then watching my family piddle around while it gets cold.

Growing up we always ate at the table,pass the beans or meat,type of thing.Clean your plate.
But my parents were very old school and mom was what was called a housewife and she took her job very seriously.Probably the hardest working woman I've ever seen.She did it all,sewing,laundry,ironing,cleaning and doctor.Bless her heart,I think that's why she left this earth first.
My family was much more lax,because my wife worked outside the house,and we basically made due for supper,though the kids ate well.
Holidays are old school though.
The one thing about these old type meals was we talked and had good times around the table.
And we were all a-holes for eating and leaving mom the mess.
No wonder she was so happy when deer season came around and we went to camp.

Buffet style for casual meals/daily meals

We're lazy and trashy. No guests make yo plate out of what it was prepared in. No need for extra dishes for presentation.

Buffet style at my house growing up. Serving from the pot and then eating together was just fine by us kids because we had to clean the dishes.
Now that I have my own home and have a dishwasher, it's like I try to see how many dishes I can dirty. I had beanie weenies tonight. I dirtied three bowls, a knife, two spoons, and the plastic splatter cover in the microwave.
